Stumbling In (The Shore Series #3) by M.R. Joseph - Arc Review

SYNOPSIS:

Everyone in Sandy Cove knows that Willow Taylor and Max Vincent are like oil and
water. They live to torment one another and if they survive being in the same room together, it’s nothing short of a miracle. Sure, Willow is rich, blonde and beautiful and Max is an achingly hot and talented up and coming rock star—but that just makes it easier for them to hate one another!

Until one night. One drunken night. It was just supposed to be a night of celebration after each of their best friends’, Harlow and Cruz, were reunited. But a few hours of civility leads to one night of unbridled, earth-shattering, cataclysmic sex. It doesn’t help that the details are sketchy in their minds because the off-the-charts after effects still linger. One thing is clear…that night changed everything.

From that moment on, sabotaging each other’s hook-ups was their primary goal until a truce is made. A pact. No strings attached, no feelings, just more of what their bodies crave whenever they see one another. They both get what they want and no one gets hurt.

Until someone does. Until love and tragedy gets in the way. The heat between Willow and Max is undeniable but will that spark of desire be enough to sustain them through the pain and heartache that threatens them?

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: June 2015.

I have so much love for this author, M.R. Joseph seems to effortlessly weave stories of love and lust, of loss and regret, of second chances and new beginnings and every single time I find myself falling in love with new characters, as they cement themselves in my heart and soul, I celebrate their joys and commiserate with their sorrows, such is the type of connection I have with her characters, the soul deep affinity I feel for the people she creates.

Max is cocky, arrogant, on his way to being a rock god and funny as hell, he gives as good as he gets and isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers. Not only is he working the whole self assured angle but he's hiding this huge heart that truly cares for his friends, he's not some shallow, one dimensional character who's flat, his energy jumps off the page, his sense of fun is infectious, and his zest for life and for living each day endears him to the reader so effortlessly.

Willow is the original ice queen, she's rich, beautiful and uses sass and smart arse remarks to keep people at a distance. Willow isn't a new character as such, she's had a good life, loving parents, every luxury money could buy, she has the perfect example of what love is in her parents, and her friendship with Harlow has shown her the kind of love that can exist between friends, but even with all the trappings wealth can provide Willow still guards her heart.

There's a beautiful fragility and yet a fierce strength in Willow, the dichotomy of the two warring sides of her personality made it so incredibly easy to be captivated by her, despite the seemingly shallow image she portrayed to the world at times there was always a depth lurking just below the surface, one that dragged you in, demanded your attention. There were moments of heart wrenching pain, unadulterated joy and soul shattering loss that stole my breath, Joseph's ability to weave a happy and at times silly and sexy romp through early adulthood, and yet blend it with characters that make you stop, and a story that tugs at your heartstrings shows the kind of talent that the author possesses. One that leaves me awe struck, stunned and ultimately so unbelievably overjoyed that I can lose myself so utterly in another world that's at once so real it's tangible, and yet so far away that I can watch the story unfold from the sidelines.

Stumbling In is a story of first impressions and second chances, it's a story of giving in, letting go, and allowing yourself to free fall, it's about believing in yourself, it's about trusting in those around you, it's about friends and lovers and family, there's such a beautiful message that underlies this entire story, and what I adore so much about M.R. Joseph is that, that message can mean something different to each reader, for me Stumbling In reminded me the kind of joy and love that's in this world when we are willing to open ourselves up to it, it reminded me that I am enough, I'm not just my past nor my present or my future, I'm a sum of all of it, and so much more, but more than anything this book reminded me that friendship is precious, to hold onto it with two hands, to savour it, to cherish it, to revel in it because when things fall apart, when you feel broken, the people you surround yourself with will be the ones to help hold you together.

EXCERPT:

Excerpt From Max-

Stumbling In-The Shore Series Book 3

I go to her and place my hand on her shoulder, and she turns around and I’m faced with the most unexpected thing that I think has ever happened. Willow turns around and grabs handfuls of my shirt and pulls me to her soft, wanting lips. She kisses me, and it’s just not a kiss that breathes lust but it breathes the fire of passion, of meaning. It makes my hair stand on end and leaves the skin beneath electrified. The soft motion of her mouth with mine, the scent of her hair and the taste of her tongue dancing inside my mouth, spins me into oblivion. There’s more to this kiss. I feel it in my bones. I feel it in my soul. She kisses me like we are music. We are the rhythm joining together with the notes and the melody. I grasp the back of her head and thread my fingers in her hair softly. I deepen the kiss and I reach the point where I swim in this moment so deep that I don’t want to come to the surface… and that’s when she pulls away and I know I’m fucked.

I’m so fucking fucked.

She holds her lips with her long, slender fingers. Her eyes find mine and I’m still lost in whatever that was. I can’t even ask her because I can’t even speak. It wasn’t the normal wanton kiss that happens between us when we just use each other. No, oh no, this was something else.

“Willow…” She holds up her hand to stop me.

“Let’s just leave it at that, Max.”

I walk past her slowly as I hear the relentlessness of the bus’s horn and slide open the door to her room. I turn around and she’s already back to leaning on the rail. Her body turned to the calm waters. The sun shines down on her bare, bronzed shoulders and the wind picks up and blows her hair around again. It’s the last time I’ll see her in person for a while and after that kiss, my head and something else right at this very moment doesn’t want it to be the last time. It’s not the right time to analyze what that kiss was. Maybe it was a goodbye kiss. A proper send off. The end of whatever we were to each other. Was it a blessing for me to go and see where it goes with Cora? What was that? I’ll tell you what it was. The unexpected.

“I’ll miss you, Willow.” Not being so sure she can hear me, I say it as I walk out the door. I leave her with my brain consisting of mush and my lips already feeling some sort of loss.

Most of all… a lot to think about.

Under The Lights (A Daylight Falls Novel) by Dahlia Adler - ARC Review

Released: 30th June 2015

Blurb:

Josh Chester loves being a Hollywood bad boy, coasting on his good looks, his parties, his parents' wealth, and the occasional modeling gig. But his laid-back lifestyle is about to change. To help out his best friend, Liam, he joins his hit teen TV show, Daylight Falls...opposite Vanessa Park, the one actor immune to his charms. (Not that he's trying to charm her, of course.) Meanwhile, his drama-queen mother blackmails him into a new family reality TV show, with Josh in the starring role. Now that he's in the spotlight—on everyone's terms but his own—Josh has to decide whether a life as a superstar is the one he really wants.

Vanessa Park has always been certain about her path as an actor, despite her parents' disapproval. But with all her relationships currently in upheaval, she's painfully uncertain about everything else. When she meets her new career handler, Brianna, Van is relieved to have found someone she can rely on, now that her BFF, Ally, is at college across the country. But as feelings unexpectedly evolve beyond friendship, Van's life reaches a whole new level of confusing. And she'll have to choose between the one thing she's always loved...and the person she never imagined she could.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: June 2015.

I had not read Dahlia Adler previously to picking up Under the Lights, in fact when I dove in I was unaware that it was the second book in the Daylight Falls series, and it didn't lessen my enjoyment of this title, nor did it impact greatly on my ability to understand the story. In hindsight, I now want to go back and find out all about Liam and Ally, learn their story in the same way I devoured Josh and Van's.

Despite being the second in the series, Under the Lights focuses on characters introduced in Behind the Scenes, Josh Chester is the consummate bad boy, happily coasting through life using his parents wealth, his good looks and the odd modelling job to guarantee the unlimited parties and willing women that make his life the wide ride it is, taking a guest role on his best friend Liam's show Daylight Falls seems like a way to boost his profile, being blackmailed into starring on his mother's reality show keeps him in the media but the more he does, the more he begins to wonder if acting and Hollywood is something he wants to do, Josh has been coasting through life for so long that all of sudden when he looks at everyone around him he starts to question his life and what it is he truly wants.

Vanessa Park is a star in her own right, role model for young girls watching her show, she's finely crafted her good girl persona with the help of her publicist, she's been linked to the right boys in order to continue the image of a wholesome young woman saving herself for marriage further pushing her media presence, fake relationships, hand holding, appeasing her parents, keeping her agent happy, and doing with a smile on her face is what she's used to, but when Van is given a new handler in the form of Bri, things start to change, feelings start to emerge, desires grow, and confusion builds because all of a sudden Van has someone in her grasp that intrigues and interests her in ways that no one has before, but her image has been so carefully constructed that the slightest push back from her may just cause the house of cards she's built to come crumbling down taking her professional dreams with her.

Under the Lights captivated me almost immediately, so much so that as I write this review I'm kicking myself for having it sitting on my kindle for so long without diving straight in, Josh is definitely the quintessential alphahole, he's brash, can be a total arse and is used to getting his way, the more I read, the more I stepped into his world and saw it from his point of view the more I found myself desperately wanting him to find what he was searching for, the soft side he kept hidden so much of the time would come shining through endearing him to me so fully that I couldn't help but root for him.

Van has so much sass at times that she was this bright light you couldn't look away from, and yet she also had this softer voice that was so apparent when you crawled inside her head and witnessed her excitement and joy, her trepidation and confusion as she experienced lust and chemistry with the last person she ever expected to be attracted to, first times, first loves, first everything's are exciting and terrifying all at the same time and you feel every inch of that come across in Van's point of view. She's built this perfect image and life but she's not truly living, and at a point where she should be enjoying every second of this exciting time in her life she's stuck somewhere between reality and make believe, while I loved getting into Liam's mind and seeing his story evolve, what I truly adored was seeing Van come into her own, her journey of self discovery and coming of age was beautiful to watch, she grabbed me by the collar and demanded my attention, and I couldn't look away.

This may have been my first book by Dahlia Adler, but it certainly won't be my last, Behind the Scenes has just skyrocketed up my TBR and I can't wait to dive in.

Feature and Follow Friday #1

Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. The purpose is to meet new people and gain more followers in the book blogging community.

Question of the Week: If you can step into one characters shoes (in a book) and be them for a day who would it be and why? Also if you want to be creative, what scene? - Suggested by Seeing Night Book Reviews

If I could jump into any book, I would land feet first into Sugartown as Pepper from Now Leaving Sugartown by Carmen Jenner.

She's feisty and kick arse, she's tough and a smart arse, covered in tat's and rocks the M.A.C but most of all she's beautifully broken and she gives me faith that there's light in even the darkness moments.
Reconditioned ice cream truck and Sammy Belle...sounds like my perfect scene...

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: June 2015

I don't even know where to start with Vintage vol. 2! There are so many different facets to this story, part romance, part sexy erotica, part suspense. There were so many moments where I thought I had everything figured out only to realise I was off the mark.

Roxanna Cecilia Price has lived the last few years in a state of forced numbness, loss after loss has caused her to withdraw from so much, a constant rotation of work then home has been her days, Parker James lit a spark in her usually dull world causing her to think and feel more than she has in such a long time. Vintage vol. 1 left the reader waiting with baited breath for CC's response to Parker's question, in true Lisa Suzanne fashion, everything was not as it seemed, as I dove in to vol.2 I was right back to that tingly, nervous butterfly feeling as I desperately tried to figure out not only who the players were but their roles in everything happening.

Do I sound like I'm being deliberately vague? I am, I truly believe that so much of the experience that comes from reading is finding out all the little intricacies and secrets, as much as I was already a huge fan of #TeamJames in vol.1, Parker James has certainly cemented himself on my most swoon worthy book boyfriend list, his perfect balance of fierce protector, dominant alpha, romantic swoon master, and sexy as sin leading male hit all the right buttons for me, the more I read the more invested I became.

There's so much I loved in this two part series, it felt like a such a departure from Lisa Suzanne's previous work, and yet still very much maintained her voice, strong female leads that walk that fine line showing that they can be both strong and independent and yet still soft and vulnerable. Where suspense is generally not a sub genre I'm drawn to read, I found Vintage blended it perfectly with smoking hot sexiness and heartbreakingly beautiful romantic moments, the combination enthralled me, it commanded my attention, meaning that I couldn't put it down. The blend of these two leading characters is what ultimately drew me in so much to their story, and left me wanting more long after I turned the last page.
