The Goal (Off Campus #4) by Elle Kennedy

New Cover

Original Cover

Blurb:

She’s good at achieving her goals…

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: September 2016.

Elle Kennedy has quickly become one of my favourite authors, the Off Campus series I often find myself rereading when I'm in a funk, there's something inherently thrilling about these big, brooding, dirty talking ice hockey players that ticks all the right boxes for me. Throughout the previous books in the Off Campus series, I've found myself particularly drawn to John Tucker, the lovable larrikin of the house, the man that ensures that the groceries are done and meals are cooked, the one that makes sure the house and the team continues to function. I wasn't under any false impressions that Tuck didn't enjoy the perks of being a former Frozen Four winner, surely having women throwing themselves at him wasn't a chore, being one of the undisputed Kings of school wouldn't have hurt, but there was always something deeper there that intrigued me, something about him that left me eager for more, I like most readers finished The Score absolutely desperate for The Goal, not only for Tuck but for the elusive Sabrina.

"I'm trashy, I live with trashy people. I belong in a trashy place. The question is, will I ever be able to rub off the stench of my past to belong at Harvard? I thought I could."

Throughout the previous books Sabrina seemed like a stuck up b*tch to put it mildly, she is self sufficient to the extreme, determined to excel in everything she takes on, tough as nails in every aspect of her life. Sabrina's life is carefully constructed timetable, every activity, every moment scheduled to precision, while she may be well known on campus, very few actually truly know her, she knows how to get in, get off and get out, strict rules for all of her brief sexual encounters, and keeping people at a distance is a way of life. Everything about Sabrina shouts stand back and stay away, while most people see the out of reach, bitchy façade she puts on, Tuck see's past it all and is instantly intrigued, desperate to know more about the woman who quickly captured his attention.

"I'm usually the strong one. But right now I don't feel strong at all."

Tuck has seen both sides of the proverbial coin, growing up he was all to aware of the trials of living in a single income home, his widowed mother sacrificing to ensure he never went without, while still living a modest existence, despite living away at college, playing for a championship winning team, proud recipient of a scholarship and big man on campus he has dreams of something more, a career outside of hockey, a wife and children, his Southern charm showing through.

"You're the only one for me. My sun rises and sets on your smile. My heart beats because yours does.

What I adored so much about this story is that Sabrina makes no apology for who she is, and what she does, she's straight forward, blunt to a fault, Sabrina has only one goal in life, to work her way out of her soul crushing existence and to a life she's always dreamt of, one where she's self sufficient, financially stable, and shooting to the top of Harvard, kicking ass and taking names. She doesn't need a big circle of friends, to be liked or dare say loved, she certainly doesn't need a man, but for the first time in her life, with John Tucker she finds herself wanting one, wanting someone to share the load. For the first time in a long time, there wasn't a clear hero for me, both Sabrina and Tucker stole my heart in equal measure, while fans of this series will remember the bombshell that Elle Kennedy dropped at the end of The Score, with the two stories running partly concurrently, I expected to lose that WOW! factor, and I found myself even more drawn into the story, immediately invested because of that. While The Goal is the fourth book in the Off Campus series, all of these titles can be read as stand alones. While The Deal will always hold a special place in my heart, The Goal and in fact this entire series continues to go from strength to strength, everything about this book stole my heart,
with the perfect blend of heat, heart and humor The Goal hit the mark for me.

Kicked by Celia Aaron

Blurb:

Trent Carrington.
Trent Mr. Perfect-Has-Everyone-Fooled Carrington.
He’s the star quarterback, university scholar, and happens to be the sexiest man I’ve ever seen. He shines at any angle, and especially under the Saturday night stadium lights where I watch him from the sidelines. But I know the real him, the one who broke my heart and pretended I didn’t exist for the past two years.
I’m the third-string kicker, the only woman on the team and nothing better than a mascot. Until I’m not. Until I get my chance to earn a full scholarship and join the team as first-string. The only way I'll make the cut is to accept help from the one man I swore never to trust again. The problem is, with each stolen glance and lingering touch, I begin to realize that trusting Trent isn’t the problem. It’s that I can’t trust myself when I’m around him.

This is a full-length, sweet, hot, safe, standalone American football romance novel.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: July 2016.

Kicked was my first book by Celia Aaron, from the outset it sounded like something I could sink my teeth into, sports romance....CHECK, college students....CHECK, sexy...., CHECK, sweet....CHECK, and air of second chance romance...CHECK CHECK CHECK! From the very first page I was smitten, Cordy seemed like the kind of girl you'd want to be friends with, funny, smart, and holds a position on the mens football team, no, before you ask...Cordy is not a cheerleader, due to some previous inclusion issues, Cordy holds a place on the team as second string kicker, sure she may be the one token female on the team, but she's a talented athlete, while her passion may reside in soccer, her place on the football team ensures a partial scholarship.

I was immediately drawn into the story, while moments seemed predictable - manwhore best friend loving her from afar anyone, there was a level of intrigue surrounding Cordy and team superstar Trent that had me entranced. They had a past two years ago but it crumbled before it even had a chance to flourish. I needed to know more, I found myself devouring those first few chapters, desperate to know why their romance didn't work out, but I found that knowing why didn't leave me with that OH MY moment I was hoping for, and instead I was left feeling a little underwhelmed.

From that moment the story felt both rushed and intensely slow for me, the moments I wanted to see more developed fell flat and other moments I felt dragged onto long, extended sex scenes that while hot, didn't necessarily add to the story for me. I wanted to love Kicked, initially I truly believe I would, but overall the story was just to inconsistent for me, individually I enjoyed the characters, and times I felt a stronger sense of connection to Aaron's words, but unfortunately for me I just wasn't able to engage with the story as a whole and found myself more easily distracted than I would like when fully invested in a book.

Jockblocked (Gridiron #2) by Jen Frederick - Review

Blurb:

She’s always played it safe…

College junior Lucy Washington abides by one rule—avoid risk at all costs. She’s cautious in every aspect of her life, from her health, to her mock trial team, to the boring guys she dates. When a brash, gorgeous jock walks into the campus coffeeshop and turns his flirt on, Lucy is stunned by the force of attraction. For the first time ever, she’s willing to step out of her comfort zone, but can she really trust the guy who’s determined to sweep her off her feet?

He’s always played around…

Entering his last year of college eligibility, linebacker Matthew "Matty" Iverson has the team captaincy in his sights. And it’s his for the taking, if he can convince his quarterback Ace Anderson to give up the starting position. Luckily, Matty already has an edge—the hottie he’s lusting over just happens to be Ace’s childhood best friend. Getting Lucy on his side and in his bed? Hell yeah. Matty is more than confident he can have both, but when he falls hard for Lucy, it’s time for a new game plan: convince the woman of his dreams that she’s not sleeping with the enemy.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: January 2016.

Everything about Lucy Washington's perfectly constructed life means that she might just be the worlds best planner, she's reached expert level when it comes to calculating risks and making wise decisions, none of those include the devilishly sexy Matthew Iverson, Lucy has her days planned out, hell she's got her future mapped out, and Matthew is just another jock on the football team, who has women falling at his feet and gets away with everything due to his sportsgod status, he's a perfect example of a bad risk assessment, with warnings from her closest childhood friend and teammate, she's sure nothing good could come from becoming his friend, despite the physical attraction she feels.

Matty has never been one to rest on his laurels, with hours dedicated to practice on the field and study off of it, he's made it his life's mission to pay his dues for everything he achieves. People like to assume that he's had his life handed to him, correcting that assumption has never really been high on his list of priorities until Lucy Washington crossed his path. Mounting pressure from his coach, the need to ensure his team is fighting fit, and ready for another championship add to his already heavy load, but for the first time in a long time his main focus a girl that there's more to him that meets the eye, that he's the kind of man worth taking a risk on.

"This is ordinary to him and the risk list I've been adding to - the one with all the pictures of his past liaisons, the one scribbled with the warnings of Ace - starts to look badly imbalanced."

Jockblocked was a fun, easy read, with equal balance between heat, humour and heart, it was the perfect way to squirrel away a Summer afternoon.  The connection between Matty and Lucy was believable and honest, this tale of college football, best laid plans and risk assessments, of the things you find when you step outside your comfort zone, of the friends you make, and the ones you lose.
Matty's self assuredness, his ability to know almost immediately what he wanted and was determined to get it, made him even more endearing, while Lucy's continual need to prep and plan and think everything through balanced them for me, bringing an dynamic to them that made me want to climb into the book and hug them while simultaneously slapping them silly.
Frederick had me smiling and giggling and swooning through out, where I struggled with Sacked this was a much stronger read for me, I was easily able to read this in one sitting, and didn't find my attention wavering,  Jockblocked was a great break from heavier titles, with a great blend of everything you expect from a College romance, and if you're looking for something light and fun, something a little bit sexy with a nice balance of heart you won't go wrong here.

The Score (Off Campus #3) by Elle Kennedy Review

Released: 11th January 2016.

Blurb:

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: January 2016.

Dean Di-Laurentis lives a charmed life, wealth, book smarts, talented hockey player, women throwing themselves at him, he seems to have the world at his feet, and in all honesty he does, there's not a lot the self confessed Manwhore has to complain about, life is good, it's even better when you live your life by your own code of never getting bogged down in what people think of you, never losing sleep over inconsequential opinions, it's good in theory but in reality for most of us we struggle to reconcile our own thoughts vs. the opinions of people around us. Seeing the world through Dean's eyes, seeing him impart his wisdom on living a life free of fear of judgement on Allie was both fun and insightful.

Allie Hayes life just went to hell in a hand basket, school is good, she has her future planned out, but after one too many arguments with her long term boyfriend Sean she's finally done with their relationship, the only problem is that she's been there before, Sean throws down an ultimatum or challenges her career choices and Allie ends it, until of course he apologises and #boom back together, Allie knows she needs to stay strong, that she's making the right decision in ending things, but reconciling herself from the role of girlfriend to single girl isn't easy.

When Allie and Dean's lives cross neither is prepared for what will happen, The Score isn't instalove, it isn't even instalust, the connection these two develop is organic, as they converse and get to know each other better than the limited contact they had previously had allowed, the reader can see something there, some spark of something more, something bigger begin to develop, and for me, here in lied the beauty of Elle Kennedy's words, because nothing here felt forced, nothing here had me scratching my head trying to figure out who Dean or Allie are as characters. Their chemistry was clear, their burgeoning relationship obvious, this soul deep connection that grew from Dean's flippant offer to help Allie move on from her ex, that ignited something ferocious and real for both of them.

What I loved so much here was that Allie begins The Score as this young woman who almost needs to be saved from herself, she needs someone to prevent her from backtracking, she requires someone to not only back her life choices but to believe on them with her, there's a sense that Allie is somehow the weaker one here, that she's the one who is still figuring things out while Dean has got his whole life mapped out, and yet there's so many times where Allie got to show her strength, her tenacity, her ability to look at the world around her when things are crashing down and still find the good there, but more than that her ability to know what she wants and what she deserves  and more importantly the things she needs to do in order to become the person she knows she's capable of being show's her growth throughout The Score. There's a definite sexiness to this story, one I've come to expect from Elle Kennedy, one that you would expect from Dean "man whore" Di-Laurentis, the man is known all over campus as a guaranteed good time, but more than just this inherent sexiness, the obvious chemistry, was the pure swoon worthy moments that made my heart smile, those moments when done properly make you sigh, it's those hints of first love, of a love that's bigger than you ever imagined it could be, one that makes you question everything, one that has the power to lift you up and tear you apart.

For me The Score is exactly what college romance is supposed to be, part coming of age, part romance, believable and relatable angst, not the kind that makes you want to tear your hair out while shouting "ohhh commmmmeeee onnnn..." a story that makes you giggle and swoon, one that when you turn the last page leaves a smile on your face, this series has fast become a favourite of mine, one I often revisit, it's everything I want from a college drama, a light hearted and sexy story that has depth, The Score was a great way to kick off my 2016 reading list, and that little tease Kennedy left readers makes me even more eager for what's to come for the Off Campus series.

Finding Dandelion (Dearest #2) by Lex Martin - Review

Blurb:

When soccer all-star Jax Avery collides with Dani Hart on his twenty-first birthday, their connection is instantaneous and explosive. For the first time in years, Jax isn’t interested in his usual hit-it and quit-it approach.

But Dani knows better. Allowing herself a night to be carefree and feel the intensity of their attraction won’t change anything when it comes to dealing with a player. So when Jax doesn’t recognize Dani the next time he sees her, it shouldn’t be a total shock. The fact that he’s her new roommate's brother? That’s a shock.

Dani doesn’t regret that night with Jax, just the need to lie about it. Since her roommate has made it clear what she thinks about her brother’s “type” of girl, the last thing Dani wants is to admit what happened.

Jax knows he’s walking a fine line on the soccer team. One more misstep and he’s off the roster, his plans to go pro be damned. Except he can’t seem to care. About anything… except for the one girl who keeps invading his dreams.

Despite Jax’s fuzzy memory of his hot hookup with his sister’s friend, he can’t stay away from her, even if it means breaking his own rules. But there are bigger forces at work–realities that can end Dani’s college career and lies that can tear them apart.

Jax realizes what he’s losing if Dani walks away, but will he sacrifice his future to be with her? And will she let him if he does?

FINDING DANDELION, the second book in the Dearest series, is a stand-alone novel. This New Adult romance is recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: August 2015.

After absolutely devouring Dearest Clementine I was excited to dive into Finding Dandelion, what I love so much is the cross over from Dearest Clementine, the step back in time that we get in the beginning gives the reader a greater understanding of Jax and Clem's joint birthday celebration. As the story continues we get to know more about Clem's brother Jax and her roommate Dani. On the outset Jax looks like the typical young guy, life isn't exactly a party but it's not sad, tough existence either, he's a talented soccer player, he's grown up surrounded by money, he's never financially wanted for anything, he has women throwing themselves at him and he's not academically challenged either.

When Clem's roommate Dani hooks up with Jax as their birthday celebration, it's already pushing her boundaries, but when he promptly forgets all about her and ends up on the arm of someone else she's mortified, embarrassed and humiliated. After hearing all about Jax's womanising ways from Clem she's even more disgusted in herself, for just being another woman in a long line of women before her, she's resigned to forgetting all about that lapse in her judgement and to forget it ever happened, which seems easy because Jax sure as hell doesn't remember her anyway.

When a series of event transpire that force Jax and Dani into close proximity, Dani suddenly gets to see another side of Jax, as they bond she's stuck harbouring her secret from him, the question is, will Jax turn out to be exactly what she always thought he was, or will he surprise her and be everything she hoped her could be.

Jax has this sweet side that so few see, he's got a past that left him jaded and untrusting, he used to people expecting certain things from him and he's been happy to live up to that expectation, but with Dani he's intrigued and more than interested, despite the hard knocks Dani has been on the receiving end of she's got a strength to her, she's tenacious, and despite feeling fragile at times, she's determined not to be one of those poor me people.

Finding Dandelion is definitely more of a slow burn romance, this is friends to...well not quite lovers, but definitely friends to more, and it left me with that warm and tingly feeling that this trope is sure to inspire, it's fun and sexy, and yet heartbreaking and poignant, because this is so much more than just another NA college romance. I read this in one sitting and can't wait to dive into Daren's story next.

Wrong by Jana Aston - Review

Blurb:

I have a history of picking the wrong guy. Gay? Player? Momma’s boy? Check, check and check.

Now I can’t stop fantasizing about one of the customers at the coffee shop I work at between classes. It’s just a harmless crush, right? It’s not like I ever see this guy outside of the coffee shop. It’s not like I’m going to see him while attempting to get birth control at the student clinic. While wearing a paper gown. While sitting on an exam table. Because he’s the doctor. Shoot. Me.

But what if, for once, the man I’ve had the dirtiest, most scandalous fantasies about turned out to be everything but wrong?

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: November 2015.

In the lead up to the release of Wrong I kept seeing teasers and the bright pink cover flood my news feed, I was intrigued, in the wake of release I kept seeing Wrong fly up the charts, I read the blurb and it seemed like a good fit for me, it seemed slightly irreverent, funny, sexy, all things that immediately appeal to me in a book, and for the first chapter or two I was still intrigued, unfortunately though for me that's where it ended.

The premise is that Sophie, a college student has been fairly unlucky in love and relationships, she's currently dating Mike, and is thinking she's finally ready to go all the way... virgin college student isn't a far fetched plot line, I actually kind of liked that about Sophie, she was quirky, and cute and yet so incredibly strong willed, she wasn't going to just blindly follow everyone else to satisfy what other people thought was normal. While Sophie is getting ready to approach the whole sex thing she's been busy lusting after a regular customer Luke, at her part time job where she works as a barista. For those few moments each visit she lusts after the mysterious Luke, he seems so much more of an adult her college buddies and boyfriend, but it's an innocent crush, it's not like she's ever going to see him in real life.

Until of course she goes to the student medical clinic to discuss her contraception options and get a routine physical, this is where this story started to crumble for me.... having your crush turn out to be none other than the doctor who's about to get all up in your business wasn't what made me scratch my head, I'm sure stranger things have happened and this is fiction after all, but that was the beginning of the end for me.... a physical and pap smear that results in Sophie having an orgasm on the table while Luke checks her over had me rolling my eyes, Luke constantly turning up when she least expects it, the way in which they get together, even their sex scenes, and I'm not a prude, give me hot, sweaty, dirty and kinky sex scenes and I'm there in a flash, I don't mind the odd spot of erotica, but generally I expect sex to further the story, propel it in some way, and unfortunately it never did, it felt off, gratuitous at times, and had me skimming just to get past it, there were numerous times I was tempted to DNF and yet I kept going back, hoping the author could draw me in but it never happened. Sophie started out as being a heroine I thought I could really get behind, but the more I read the less I cared about her, and Luke was almost Dr Jekyll/ Mr Hyde for me, he had this sweet side, and yet was so totally stand offish and almost brutish, I had hoped he was just exhibiting some alpha tendencies but for me he fell flat, much like the rest of the story. I know Wrong has been hugely popular, nabbing it's spot on both USA Today and New York Times best sellers lists, unfortunately it completely missed the mark for me.

The End Game by Kate McCarthy - ARC Review

Blurb:

“Professional athletes are pillars of their respective communities. They are heroes in the eyes of boys and girls and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents their community.”

The public loves a good scandal. Seeing someone fall from the pinnacle of success makes a great headline. No one knows that better than I do. What started out as a promising career in college football, spiraled into scandal and shame.

But being a hero is easier said then done. Especially when there are those who expected to see the great Brody Madden fail. I craved nothing except being the best—willing to do anything to prove them wrong. But I went too far, and I tried too hard, and it broke me.

“At the time of going to print, Jordan Elliott was unavailable for comment.”

I met Brody Madden in my senior year of college. An Australian native on an international scholarship, I was the female soccer sensation with stars in her eyes and no room for a hotshot wide receiver with a chip on his shoulder.

But a heart bursting with ambition and a driving fire to succeed isn’t made of stone. I became his strength, his obsession, and the greatest love of his life. Only I wasn’t there when he needed me most.

This is a story about love and a game that takes everything. Where the path to glory is paved with sacrifice. Where pressure makes you, or breaks you, and triumph is born in the ashes of failure. Where two people’s end game will change everything.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: August 2015.

I was a Kate McCarthy virgin prior to The End Game, I've had Fighting Redemption sitting on my kindle for a year now and I'm not entirely sure why I still haven't read it yet, that's the life of a book addict right, you #1click and it gets added to your never ending TBR... but now after finishing The End Game the back catalogue of Ms McCarthy's has definitely moved up my list.

On paper our hero and heroine couldn't be more different, their similarities seem to start and end with them both being at the top of their respective games, both Brody Madden and Jordan Elliot are young rising stars on the sporting field, Brody is the star wide receiver of his college NFL team, he has agents and talent scouts chasing him, with offers to go pro coming at him from all sides, he's strong and focused, he's no doubt the sexy footballer guys look up to and girls want to be with, but he's a contradiction because there's so much more to him than just the football star.

Jordan Elliot is singularly focused on her studies and her burgeoning soccer career, she's been followed from a young age as the next big thing for women's soccer and she won't let anything or anyone come in between her and her dream, especially not a guy who's just as focused on his own career, playing at a professional level means sacrifice, it's certainly lonely at the top and neither Brody nor Jordan can afford to lose sight of what they want.

Despite this story being about elite sport stars and college and everything that comes with young love and lust, McCarthy manages to steer clear of the teen clichés, The End Game is clearly rooted in the NA genre, there's a raw beauty to her words, on the surface both Brody and Jordan have it all but what the world doesn't see is the scars the past has left on them, Brody has been given financial security from his family but not a loving, supportive home life, he's railing against the pain of growing up disconnected and unwanted, his learning disabilities have never been acknowledged and have left him feeling less than, hiding behind the on field and party persona he has so carefully created, he's never allowed anyone to see him clearly, never let anyone in, until Jordan forces him to try harder, to be better, to want more. While Brody was certainly the alpha in this story, Jordan was the hero for me, she's not just sexy because of her athletic frame, but she exudes this wild and free spirit wrapped up in doing her duty to honour those who mean the most to her, to be the best, she has this temerity that is both endearing and awe inspiring, because this woman is so much more than just her on field persona, so much more than she gives herself credit for, and yet at the heart of it, she's just a young woman finding her way in a foreign country, while navigating college crushes, lust and young love.

"But being up here is hard, and it's lonely. And if you fall, it's a long way down and no one's waiting at the bottom to catch you."

McCarthy takes us into the world of competitive sports, college and the sacrifices one makes to pursue their dreams, The End Game allows us to see behind the velvet curtain, to the pressures athletes face and all the work that goes into being number one, it's raw and at times tough to read, and there were moments that truly stole my breath, as Brody and Jordan chipped away at my heart and embedded themselves in my soul. The End Game has this saga like quality, it's a story that still plays through my mind like a movie reel of favourite quotes and loved scenes, of words and looks shared, of moments in time frozen in my memory, it's a story I'm not soon to forget.

Shutting the door, I walk up the slight incline behind Brody. He sits down at the top of the crest and pats the grassy spot beside him.
“You didn’t mention this part when you explained our date.”
“I can’t give away all my secrets now, can I?”
The grass is a thick blanket on the ground and when I stretch out flat, the rich, earthy scent of soil sweeps over me. My eyes lift to the sky and that’s when I get it. It’s perfectly clear and millions of stars are scattered diamonds twinkling above us—bright and magical.
“Besides,” Brody adds as he lies down beside me and sweeps out his arm, encompassing all of it. “How do you explain that?”
He’s right. You can’t. “It’s beautiful.”
“Is this what the stars are like for you back home?”
“No. Back home it’s different.”
“Different how?”
Homesickness swamps me. As beautiful as Texas is, it’s not Australia. Somehow the stars are always brighter where you belong. “Because there’s no place like home.”
“You’re wrong.”
I turn my head and stare at Brody. He’s not looking at me. His head is tilted toward the sky, eyes riveted on the beauty above him. My gaze follows the line of his profile. From the curl of his hair to the perfect line of his nose, down to the mouth I want kissing me right this very instant.
“Home’s not a place where you live. It’s a feeling.” His hand nudges my own. An invitation. I twine my fingers with his and he squeezes them lightly. “Whether it’s where you are, like the football field, or who you’re with.” Brody turns his head, looking at me when he says that. It’s comforting because it unites us somehow, like it’s slowly becoming us against the world. “You can be anywhere, Jordan. Home will follow you if you follow your heart.”
My breath hitches from the beautiful simplicity of his words. Before I can talk myself out of it, I roll over and straddle him. My knees hug his hips, and he stares up at me from my seated position. My pulse pounds a heavy beat in the silence. Thump, thump, thump. It’s so loud in my ears I’m sure he can hear it.
“Show me,” I breathe. A gleam lights his dark eyes, and he sucks his lower lip inside his mouth. He knows what I’m asking, but I spell it out anyway. “Show me one of those wicked things.”
In a move that steals the air from my lungs, he takes both my hands and pulls me down against the broad width of his chest. I’m rolled over and underneath him before I can blink. The squirm in my hips is instinctive, the ache between my thighs relentless.
“Careful what you ask for,” Brody says roughly, every exquisite inch of his body pressing down on mine.
“Why?”
His lips curve. “Because when I give it to you, it won’t be enough.”
My fingers trail down the side of his face, grazing the firm jaw, cupping his cheek in my palm. Foreboding swamps me. I’m falling hard into uncharted territory, and all I see is a broken mess at the end. How is this going to end well for either of us?
“You’re an arrogant man, Brody Madden,” I whisper.
He brings his face to mine, so close I see the brilliant gold in his eyes, like flecks of light in the dark. “And you, Jordan Elliott, will be the woman who brings me to my knees,” he whispers against my lips.
“Show me,” I beg on a shaky breath.
Brody’s lashes lower and he presses a kiss to the corner of my mouth. I tilt my chin upwards, inviting more. Rather than take my lips like I ache for him to do, he shifts sideways and begins nipping at my jaw. His breath is a rasp when he reaches my earlobe, taking it between his teeth. A sharp pinch from his bite forces a whimper from my throat.
“More?” he asks, drawing back to look at me.
“Is that even a real question?”
Brody chuckles as I slide my hand up and around his nape, dragging his mouth down to mine. He groans and kisses me gently, once, and then twice.
“Brody,” I whisper, and he kisses me again, forcing my mouth open hard like he can’t hold himself in check anymore. My hair is loose and he fists chunks of it in both hands while his tongue rubs against mine, hot and aggressive. It’s almost too much, and when I jerk away I’m left gasping.
Brody doesn’t pause. He ducks his head to my neck, his tongue tasting its way down. He finds my pulse point and sucks. It’s fierce and my back arches involuntarily. His mouth shifts further down, moving on before he leaves a mark.
Sitting up, he takes the neckline of my dress in both hands. Five dainty buttons hold it together. A single wrench will rip the flimsy fabric in two. He pauses and looks at me, inhaling raggedly. “Jordan … I don’t want to ruin it.”
My brow furrows. I glance to the hands poised on my dress. They’re tense, veins straining under his skin. My head is lost in a fog when my gaze returns to his face. “Ruin my dress?”
Brody groans, a deep sound of regret and frustration. “Us.”
“You don’t want to ruin us?”
He draws his hands away from the neckline of my dress. “No.”
“How would you do that?”
“I don’t know. I just get this feeling I’m going to.” He shifts away, moving off me and rolling to his back. I turn my head. Brody’s gaze is back on the stars. I watch his throat work as he swallows, the pulse in his neck pounding visibly. “All I’ve ever wanted is to be the best. Whatever it takes. I’ll do anything. That’s how I’ll ruin us, Jordan. How can something so sweet survive a sentiment so dark?”
I roll to my side, holding my head in my hand. Cupping his face with the other, I nudge gently until he’s looking at me. “I won’t let you.”
Brody’s voice is urgent, his eyes fierce. “Promise me.”

Him by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy - Review

Blurb:

They don’t play for the same team. Or do they?

Jamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.

Ryan Wesley’s biggest regret is coaxing his very straight friend into a bet that pushed the boundaries of their relationship. Now, with their college teams set to face off at the national championship, he’ll finally get a chance to apologize. But all it takes is one look at his longtime crush, and the ache is stronger than ever.

Jamie has waited a long time for answers, but walks away with only more questions—can one night of sex ruin a friendship? If not, how about six more weeks of it? When Wesley turns up to coach alongside Jamie for one more hot summer at camp, Jamie has a few things to discover about his old friend...and a big one to learn about himself.

Warning: contains sexual situations, skinnydipping, shenanigans in an SUV and proof that coming out to your family on social media is a dicey proposition.

College romance...check....Athletes...check...sexy alpha men...check...a storyline that dragged me in, had me invested within the first few pages...CHECK... Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy was one of those books that had me intrigued when it first popped up on my facebook feed, I marked down the release date in my diary and waited (not so patiently) for it's release, I #1clicked it the second it went live and made sure I left it to read when I had time to savour it, book friends gave it high praise and I was excited to dive in, when I had a break in my blogging commitments yesterday I dove in...and I didn't put it down until I turned the last page, I struggled to walk away to eat dinner with my family, as I read the final words I set it down, smiled that smile only a book lover will understand, I sighed and then I picked it up again to read through my highlighted passages, I messaged book friends to tell them to buy this book instantly if they hadn't already, and I enjoyed that joyous moment any reader will understand when you finish a book that made your heart soar.

Ryan Wesley, has few regrets, he's a college hockey superstar about to embark on the national championships, he's got a NHL contract waiting for him once his college career is over, life is good... the only thing that truly gives him pause is the way he ended his friendship with childhood friend Jamie Canning four years ago. Embarrassed, guilt ridden, upset and angry Wes walked away from his best friend fearful some drunken decisions can never be fixed. Despite the confusion of adolescence and childhood crushes on his very male best mate one thing that night all those years ago proved was that Wes was gay, he accepted it and went about his life.

Jamie Canning lost his best friend Wes four years ago, he hasn't allowed himself to truly think about it in detail in the years that passed, he's an all star goalie with a contract waiting for him, he's not short for friends, he's got a girl who keeps his bed warm and he spends his summers coaching the sport he loves, when he runs into his ex best mate at the Frozen Four play offs, for the first time in four years he finally lets the memories of all that happened wash over him, he remembers summers spent at camp with Wes, he remembers what it's like to have a best friend by his side, and he remembers the confusion and hurt and anger of that best friend walking away without a word.

Wes is undoubtedly all alpha male, he's tough, independent, his strength isn't just physical, he's lived a life where he's had no choice but to be self sufficient, with the exception of Jamie he's never truly had anyone he's wanted to let in, he's gotten used to hiding who he is sexually, not totally in the closet but not truly out of it either, for such a huge personality being discreet constantly has taken its toll.

Jamie can't really complain about his life, he's got a loving and supportive family, friends who have his back, a girl who would jump at the chance for something more than friends with benefits, hockey and summer camp, he's never really known what it's like to have to hide a side of himself, but when he and Wes finally have the opportunity to mend their friendship, things he's never really addressed, thoughts he's never entertained are suddenly brought to the forefront of his mind, try as he might to dispel is thoughts, he is realising his sexuality might be more fluid then he thought, but more than that whatever happens this summer might be about more than just experimenting.

"Loved you every summer since I was thirteen years old."

There's this beautiful tender quality to both Wes and Jamie, Wes has come to terms with where he is and what he wants, but embarking on anything with Jamie means being vulnerable in a way he hasn't been since that fateful night four years ago. There's a stereotype that professional athletes especially hockey players must be big and tough, that gay men are flowery and effeminate, even in the day and age we live in hatred and bigotry still run rampant, it's evident that we even have to label books as M/M and not just as contemporary romance, in truth there wasn't one moment in this book that the thought that these two characters were anything but two people taking me along for a ride as they discovered what I already know to be true, that love is powerful, it has the power to build you up and bring you to your knees, that family is the one you make for yourself, that your worth is not determined by those who only wish to tear you down.

"But here's the thing about family, Ryan...blood doesn't mean shit. You just need to surround yourself with people who do love you."

From the first page to the very last line Him captivated me, it was funny and irreverent, sexy as hell, it was tender and touching, Bowen and Kennedy straddled the line of when to go for it and when to pull back perfectly, there was never a moment when I thought something was over done, and even as I turned the last page I was left wanting more and yet perfectly sated, it's a tough gig to balance heat, humour and heart but the authors knocked it out the park, and I can't wait to see what else they write together.
