Fortune (Not Like The Movies #2) by Lauren K. McKellar

Blurb:

Grace Storey can’t wait to escape her small-town chaos and head for the big city for three main reasons: Work. Better cell-phone service. And the prospect of meeting her very own Prince Charming. After all, when the guy you crushed on since high school turns out to be a psychopath, and the only viable alternative is Creepy Keith, you need to take drastic measures to ensure life as a crazy cat lady is not in your future.
What she doesn't need is a bad-boy musician with a penchant for getting under her skin. Sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll are the last things on her mind.

Darcy Fortune has three things on his mind: Sex. Drugs. And rock ’n’ roll (in that order). It’s how it has to be to keep the pain from his past at bay. After all, when you’ve hurt someone you love, it’s easier to numb the pain to keep on surviving. Easier to turn off your feelings than face the cold, harsh truth.
What he doesn’t expect is the sassy reporter with so much soul in her eyes. Could this woman be the one who breaks him?

Staying in control has never been as dangerous as this.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: November 2017.

Down and out country girl Grace Storey meets famous rock star Darcy Fortune... fake relationships ... can you hear the angels singing in the background, I totally did, the normal girl meets super famous dude was one of my first beloved tropes so it's always fun to revisit.

Grace has left the comfort and safety of home for the big city, her trek from her country town has been long and trying, the last thing she wants or needs is to run into a sexy stranger in a compromising position when she just wants a hot shower and warm bed. Darcy is charismatic in a way she isn't used to, utterly dangerous to a girl just trying to get her life sorted out.

Darcy knows all about enjoying the perks of being a rock star, seeing the world thanks to his record company, and having no shortage of women just waiting for their chance for one night with him, as with anything though, all perks have their downsides - people only seem to want something when you're at the top and no one cares about anything that can't bring them into the spotlight by association.

This might just be my favourite work by this author to date, it's pacing - spot on, the angst - real and most importantly believable, the relationship that grows and develops between Darcy and Grace felt organic - I like a good dash of reality in my fiction, and McKellar nailed it for me here. This story was fun and light and had all the hallmarks of everything I look for in my romantic comedies, a breath of fresh air, Fortune left me smiling from ear to ear.

Stand (Black Addiction #3) by T Gephart

Blurb:

Good times didn’t last forever. While Beth Hart had enjoyed being the sometimes girlfriend of Max Reynolds—the hot bass player for Black Addiction—she knew it would never be more than a casual fling. He was destined for greatness, and she cared too much to hold him back. So, before she lost her heart and her sanity, she said goodbye to the Bronx, moved to Manhattan and left her party-girl days in the past—along with Max.

Nothing made Max happier than being a success in his own right. And in the last few years, he and his band had well and truly earned it. Moving to the city and enjoying the spoils of his new lifestyle made perfect sense, and he loved his new address. It wasn’t his new huge penthouse apartment that got him excited; it was his new neighbor. The one girl he regretted letting go—Beth.

He wanted her back and would do anything to make it happen. Hopefully it wasn’t too late.

Excerpt:

Prologue - Beth

Then

It was the calm before the storm.

Neither of us had spoken about it last night, both too caught up in each other to care what it all meant. He was irresistible and I saw no reason to fight the urge. No matter how many times we drifted apart, we always seemed to end up back together. Maybe it was sheer magnetism, maybe it was his amazing smile? Or maybe it was his delicious well-toned body that did amazing things to mine? It could have been any of those reasons, but mostly it was because of the way he made me feel.

Happy.

Some of my best memories featured the man sleeping soundly beside me. And it wasn’t even about the sex, although . . . yeah, his talents weren’t only restricted to the stage. There was just something about him. Something bigger than what he already was, and I knew living in the Bronx and working at Staples wasn’t his destiny.

Sadly, neither was I.

International rock sensation Power Station had seen it too, signing up Black Addiction—Max’s band—to be their support act for a huge stadium tour. They’d already wowed the crowds at Madison Square Garden, the other crowds would follow too and then the world would see what I already knew.

Max Reynolds was a rock star.

We’d taken a break from each other around three months ago. No messy break up, no drama—just our lives taking us in different directions. It wasn’t a new thing for us, and in some ways, it just worked. But last night wasn’t us getting back together; last night was something else entirely.

His eyes were shut tight as he slept, completely unaware as I watched him. His perfect lips parted just slightly as the air whistled past. And I knew this would be the last time we could do this; at some point we’d stop the revolving door.

“Hey.” He slid open an eye, his trademark panty-melting grin not far behind. “You’re awake. Feeling okay?”

“Yep, I know better than to try and keep up with you and your band.” I couldn’t help but smile back. “How about you? You had a pretty serious commitment with that bottle of JΓ€ger.” Don’t know why I asked; I’d never seen him rocking the next morning regret like most of us did.

“Never felt better.” He smirked, his fingers trailing up my side, tickling my skin until they reached my breast. His talented fingers palmed me, hinting that he had other things on his mind other than his lack of hangover. “And my only commitment last night was pleasing you. So, tell me . . . how did I do?”

God, he was smooth.

He had this uncanny ability to make you feel like you were the only woman in the room, like nothing else mattered, and even if I knew it was temporary, I loved it.

“I think you got all the confirmation you needed last night.” I grinned as I nestled into his side. “If you want your ego stroked, you’ll have to go elsewhere.”

“That’s not what I want you to stroke, Beth,” he whispered into my ear, his voice loaded with suggestion.

“I should probably go.” It’s not that I didn’t want to stay, but it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know where this would end up. Sleep was not part of that equation.

“Why? Stay in bed with me.” His muscular, inked arms caged me against his body, the heat between us having nothing to do with the temperature in the room. “I’m almost positive you won’t regret it.”

I wouldn’t regret it.

I never would.

But in my heart I knew that this was the end of the road for the two of us. And as much as I wanted to keep going by his side, he had to walk it alone. How much longer could I stay? A week, a month, a year? He needed to be single. Free to do whatever he wanted to do when that spotlight finally hit him and not wonder if it would have been different without a girlfriend ball-and-chain. I wouldn’t be the source of anyone’s regrets, not least someone as special as Max. He was on the cusp of something great, and I cared too much to hold him back.

“You need sleep, you have a show tonight.” My hands moved over his chest. “We both know if I stay, there will be no sleep.” I tried in vain to free myself from his arm prison, my attempt laughable as he pulled me closer.

“Sleep’s overrated.” The words vibrated against my ear as I closed my eyes and remembered the moment. The one that would be the last time in his arms.

“You might not be dealing with a hangover, but you can’t outrun fatigue. Sleep and I’ll see you when you get back in town.”

It was a lie, an easy one to tell, knowing that when he came back things would be different. We would be different, and I think deep down he knew it was goodbye.

“Beth.” His lips pressed against the back of my neck, my short black hair offering me little protection as his hot breath defied logic and gave me goose bumps. “We’ll always end up like this, you and me.”

Not always, not anymore.

I didn’t dare say it. More because I didn’t want to hear it even though I knew it was the right thing to do.

“You going to let me go?” I asked, his arms showing no sign of releasing me

“For now.” He kissed my neck before loosening his hold and allowing me to sit up.

“You’re going to do great on this tour; this is what you’ve been waiting for.” I didn’t have to even force the smile on my face, I was genuinely happy for him. “Your life is about to change.”

“Whatever happens, happens.” His arms flexed and anchored at the back of his neck. “I’m still going to be me, that won’t ever change.”

“Good.” I fished my T-shirt from the edge of the bed and threw it over my head. “And I’ll be your biggest fan.” It was an easy promise to make; being supportive was something that I planned to continue. And something I could do even if it wasn’t by his side.

“Just promise you won’t get all weird and start stealing my underwear to sell on eBay.” He watched me as I slid on my own and grabbed my jeans from the floor.

“So, I should put back the pair I have stuffed into my purse?” I turned back to face him as I pulled up my jeans, batting my eyes seductively for effect.

I hadn’t actually stolen a pair of his boxer briefs, but it was easier than the inevitable so-this-is-where-it-ends that needed to happen.

“Call me, Beth.” He didn’t hesitate, his eyes looking directly into mine. It was as if he already knew that I probably wouldn’t but wouldn’t push the issue either. It was a weird stalemate, so much left unsaid, but all those words not spoken completely understood.

“See ya, Max.” I allowed myself one last look at him before scooping up my shoes and shuffling out of the room. The door closed behind me giving me a resting place for a second before I walked out of his house.

We both needed this. It wasn’t just for him; this was for me too. Together neither of us would reach our full potential, and we owed each other that. I was more than just a bass player’s girlfriend. I was more than a girl with tattoos, funky hair and a short skirt. If I stayed . . . he was too easy to fall in love with.

There was no sadness when I left; my heart wasn’t breaking. I was excited about what the future held for both of us and while I’d miss him, someday we would both be thankful.

In time we would both move on, and hopefully when he thought of me, he’d remember good things.

I would always, when I thought of him.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: June 2016.

There's something deeply satisfying for me about stand alone series, they always feel fresh and exciting and yet oddly familiar, being able to indulge in beloved characters while discovering new ones is like catching up with friends from University or old work colleagues, you spend long enough there to remember why you loved them and how much fun you used to have, and in the process get to meet partners and spouses, and hell sometimes even their children, you get a glimpse into the past and foresight into their future, you instantly see how much you have all changed, how much you've all grown in the time that had passed. When you reconnect with old friends in books you get to see all the time that passed, the leaps and bounds the characters have made, you see a lifetime of love and happiness play out before your eyes, while getting to know these new people who will soon become "your people".

Max in the previous books in the Black Addiction series seemed mostly laid back, he had the kind of swagger that makes grown women turn to mush, he had confidence, sure he could totally dominate that alpha vibe when pushed or when someone he cared about was pushed, but mostly for me he was the kind of guy girls wanted to bang like a drum and guys wanted to be like. He seemed somewhat unaffected by the trappings of wealth and rock stardom, in fact one the biggest things I loved about him and the entirety of Black Addiction was their ability to take their rise to fame in their stride. Knowing Max was seemingly unfazed by most things, I *knew* it would have to be someone pretty darn special to make him stop and take notice.

The idea of a famed celebrity or Rockstar falling for the girl who got away certainly isn't new, in fact it's the second chance romance of it all that has me practically begging the author for an early release date, but what happens when the 'one who got away' didn't really get away at all, when there was no messy break up, no broken hearts strewn across the continent, no big angsty 'I hate you because  I'll always love you' moment? Oh the adultness of it all.... in the case of Stand by Ms Gephart it was refreshing and exhilarating.

I've often spoken about my distaste for the oh no we didn't communicate properly despite being adults and being in an adult relationsip but we're still pining for one another and will eventually do the hate/love dance when we meet again plotline, in all honesty that overused trope often leaves me feeling mildly stabby, here in Stand there was none of that, if you get that all consuming I want to shake my kindle feeling like me - you can sigh with relief because you are safe. Instead Gephart effortlessly delivered a story about two people who once meant something to each other, two people who were more than just lovers, more than just friends, something that was infinitely more and yet both were too young and naΓ―ve to realise it, who found each other again as more adultier adults, two people who set out to create something bigger than the life they were living back when they called the Bronx home.

"We are not high fiving over sex, Jules....We didn't turn into frat boys last time I checked."

Everything about Stand drew me in, incredibly funny, sexy as hell, with heartbreakingly tender moments that made me swoon with delight, earlier tonight I was discussing books with those 'oh my god' moments, you know the ones...the ones that have that huge shock value scene that you sit there questioning long after you've turned the last page, sure at the time I have that 'whoaaa what did I just read moment' but often what I'm truly after is a story that I can just read, I can sink into, I can escape into, one that makes me giggle, makes me blush crimson, makes me SMILE, books that are solid from beginning to end, the ones that just grab me on the first page as if to say 'hey you, get comfy because you're not going to want to put me down'. Gephart did that, from the very first line of the prologue I was captivated, I didn't care what else hit my kindle while I was reading because I was so invested in Max and Beth that I didn't want anything or anyone else clouding my Black Addiction haze.

"I'd heard those lyrics a hundred times before, and they'd never meant as much as they did at that moment. I loved him. I'd always loved him. And even if it didn't last forever, there would never be a moment I'd regret it."

T Gephart once again had showing all the signs of a happy book nerd, uproarious laughter, sly smirks, knowing smiles, happy sighs... her writing absolutely reminding me how much I adore her work, my trip back to the boys and girl of Black Addiction, my little dalliance with Power Station made me eager for a reread of the entire two series, when your reading time is limited and reviews are mounting in your diary, you know just how big of a statement that is. It was bittersweet reading Stand, because I knew that once I finished I'd have to say goodbye to these characters I'd come to love, until I remembered that that's the beauty of reading, that your friends are only a reread away.

About T Gephart:

T Gephart is an indie author from Melbourne, Australia.

T’s approach to life has been somewhat unconventional. Rather than going to University, she jumped on a plane to Los Angeles, USA in search of adventure. While this first trip left her somewhat underwhelmed and largely depleted of funds it fueled her appetite for travel and life experience.

With a rather eclectic resume, which reads more like the fiction she writes than an actual employment history, T struggled to find her niche in the world.

While on a subsequent trip the United States in 1999, T met and married her husband. Their whirlwind courtship and interesting impromptu convenience store wedding set the tone for their life together, which is anything but ordinary. They have lived in Louisiana, Guam and Australia and have traveled extensively throughout the US. T has two beautiful young children and one four legged child, Woodley, the wonder dog.

An avid reader, T became increasingly frustrated by the lack of strong female characters in the books she was reading. She wanted to read about a woman she could identify with, someone strong, independent and confident and who didn’t lack femininity. Out of this need, she decided to pen her first book, A Twist of Fate. T set herself the challenge to write something that was interesting, compelling and yet easy enough to read that was still enjoyable. Pulling from her own past “colorful” experiences and the amazing personalities she has surrounded herself with, she had no shortage of inspiration. With a strong slant on erotic fiction, her core characters are empowered women who don’t have to sacrifice their femininity. She enjoyed the process so much that when it was over she couldn’t let it go.

T loves to travel, laugh and surround herself with colorful characters. This inevitably spills into her writing and makes for an interesting journey - she is well and truly enjoying the ride!

Based on her life experiences, T has plenty of material for her books and has a wealth of ideas to keep you all enthralled.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: May 2016

When I say I loved The Fall Up it would be an understatement, see I didn't just love it, I adored it, I fell in love with Aly Martinez in that moment, The Fall Up earned itself a PLATINUM LIPSTICK and cemented it's place on my Favourite Books of All Time List, to say I was excited for The Spiral Down again would again be an understatement, to say I had high expectations...well again massive understatement, I may have squealed when I opened my kindle to find it waiting for me, it was with excitement and trepidation that I turned to the first page... I'll be honest in those first pages I didn't particularly like Henry Alexander, sure he was funny as hell, but in those first moments when he was cocky and the consummate playboy I didn't particularly like him, I told myself I wouldn't fall under his charms, I was resolute, I was determined, Evan Roth was going to be my main man and I was going to quietly...okay nothing I do is quietly...dislike Henry... I'm quite stubborn when I want to be, it's my Taurean pride at stake after all...but as much as I fought it, as much as I tired...I JUST COULDN'T HATE HENRY! He was so darn suave, and confident, and funny, so damn funny that I found myself laughing out loud and his quips and quick witted come backs, his relationship with Carter, with Levee, with Sam, but what truly dragged me over to the dark side was the pulling back of layer after layer of this complex man, I may not have been a huge fan of Henry Alexander every moment, but Henry Gilchrist...well he stole my heart.

"But there was one thing I knew; I wasn't wrong for being who I was."

Now, I might be going against the grain here, I know The Spiral Down was supposed to be Henry's book, but Evan Roth was the hero for me, everything about him absolutely dragged me in, I was invested immediately, I was desperate to learn more about him, it was like a shot to the nervous system, I was hooked, I craved his point of view, his words, his thoughts, and the more I read, the more I discovered, the more I fell in love with him, his inner most thoughts struck a chord deep inside and I got it, I got him, I relished that feeling, revelled in the way his words resonated.

"Or, more likely, he'd be the earthquake that was going to break me down before swallowing me whole. Either way, I wasn't going to be left standing. I just had to decide how long I wanted to fight."

There is so much here I want to tell you about, so many scenes that I have highlighted and earmarked, words of prose, of exquisite dialogue, under the cocky bravado, under the high flying life of affluence, under the perfect comedic timing, and under the scorching hot interludes was a story that touched my heart. Abandonment issues, lost love, hurt feelings, desperation for something bigger than anything they've even known. There's a ethereal quality watching Henry and Evan's story unfold, watching their connection go from one of raw lust to something deeper, something more intrinsic, something so all consuming that it left them feeling simultaneously strong as a lion and weak as a mouse. No longer able to deny their connection, no longer able to tell themselves it was animalistic lust, or explosive chemistry meant with certainty that failing to discuss the changing dynamics of their relationship was no longer possible.

"I miss him. His laugh. His randomness. The way he can captivate me from across a room. The rush I felt when we were together. It was the closest thing to flying I've ever experienced with my feet on the ground."

I wanted to hate Henry, truly I did, I wanted to be unaffected by his charms, but the heady combination of Evan and Henry, of Levee and Sam, of Carter, the raw explosive chemistry that leapt off the page and incinerated everything in sight, the heartbreaking honesty of facing everyone of your fears, everyone of your past hurts, the terrifying fear of opening yourself up to someone else, of giving them your heart and asking them not to break it left me reeling as I turned the last page, The Spiral Down isn't just MM, nor is it rock star romance, nor is it anyone thing, it's requires no labels because none of them can do it justice, put simply this is a book about soaring without wings.

The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that comes with her.

PreOrder Twist (Dive Bar #2)

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: April 2016.

Since discovering Lick all those years ago, I've been an avid Kylie Scott fan, her rough and tumble rockers who have hit the big time have been keeping thoroughly entertained for quite a while now, when news of Dirty broke I was excited, Vaughan had a small but memorable role in Deep, as the sweet talking rocker who noticed Lizzy almost immediately, in another place and another time, one where Ben didn't exist Vaughan might have found his perfect match. In Dirty, Vaughan is coming home to Coeur d'Alene after a tour with the worldwide sensation Stage Dive, unfortunately his band Down Fourths didn't make it, one or two hit songs and supporting a major bank does not equate to longevity or success in the music industry. His visit is only meant to be long enough to lick his wounds, and to sell his house, before going back out on the road to conquer his dream of hitting the big time, the last thing he expects to find is a stranger in his bathtub.

"But I'm not that piece of shit. I'd never deliberately do anything to hurt or humiliate you."

Lydia has had a bad day, dressed in vintage couture, ready to marry the sweetest man she's even known when she discovers that the man of her dreams is actually the man of the Bestman's dreams as well, finding out your fiancΓ© is cheating on you on your wedding day is horrendous, realising he's gay just the next blow, hurt and humiliated, her only goal is to escape her wedding.  Jumping a fence in your dress definitely isn't pleasant, waking up in a strangers bathtub, with said stranger standing above you only cements it as the worst day in history.

"You've done nothing but show me who you are since I met you."

From the moment their paths cross, there's a tangible chemistry, despite the bumbling words, and apologies, and never minds, and breast ogling there's something innate there, like a recognition on a soul deep level, sometime that draws the two together. Both are running from past hurts, both are desperate to wipe the slate clean and start over somewhere else, whereas Vaughan has consistently ran from everyone and everything he knows to carve out a new life filled with success and music, Lydia has been desperately been seeking somewhere to fit in, to belong, in all the ways that they are similar, they are also polar opposites, however despite everything they both seem to be chasing the idea of what they thought their lives would be like, still desperately clawing onto hope of what ifs and some days, missing the things in front of them until it becomes so blaringly obvious that they can no longer deny it.

"The great thing about crying in the shower was that with all of the noise and water, there was no real evidence. No one need ever know."

Vaughan had an inherently sexiness about him, effortlessly cool, confident and charismatic, rocking that sexy ripped V that women lose their minds over, but aside from that, he's a good guy, within moments of meeting Lydia, on what could possibly be the most humiliating day of her life, a day when she feels wrung out and used, when she has to reconcile her life now, with what she imagined it would be, while she grieving the loss of the life she imagined for herself, something she has in common with Vaughan without even realising it, he see's beyond her humiliation, beyond her despair, beyond her bruised face and torn dress, he's see's a woman he wants to know. Vaughan doesn't see the too curvy girl, nor does he see the girl who's confidence took a hit because of her douchebag ex fiancΓ©, instead he sees a woman who excites and tantalises him, he see's a woman who makes him laugh, a woman who is honest and real.

"Deal with your shit, Vaughan. Mourne your parents. Get over your guilt. Give you and your sister a break. Do whatever the hell you need to, to be alright."

Lydia is so much more than just her plus size figure, more than her failed wedding, more than her cheating fiancΓ© or his stuck up family, she's taken a hit to her self esteem, beyond the hurt and embarrassment is the feeling that she's not enough, not enough for her parents, not enough for her college boyfriend, not enough for her fiancΓ© or his family, not enough to be noticed and certainly not enough to be lusted after by someone like Vaughan, such is the beauty of Scott's writing that the more she examined their burgeoning relationship, their electric connection, the explosive chemistry, the more desperate I became for these characters. Every part of Dirty was deliciously enticing, affable characters, eclectic locations, a story that seamlessly blended heart and humour, beautifully tender and yet uproariously funny, scintillating and sexy, Scott yet again gave this reader her Rocker fix, it's safe to say that the Stage Dive boys have some competition, Vaughan and Lydia proving themselves to be stars in their own right.

Sticks (Black Addiction #2) by T Gephart - ARC Review

Blurb:

Kenzie Clark had made plenty of mistakes. Who cared? Life was all about the journey, and if you couldn’t enjoy the ride then what was the point. The tough-talking guitarist from Brooklyn, NY worked hard so she could play even harder. But some mistakes weren’t so easy to walk away from. Joey Shaw, drummer for Black Addiction, was exactly that kind of a mistake.

How could one night of fun turn into a life long commitment? That’s exactly what Joey was asking himself when Kenzie showed up a few weeks later—the soon-to-be baby bump with his name written all over it. He could barely tie his shoes; how in the hell was he going to raise a kid?

With neither of them ready to become parents, it was always going to be a difficult, but there was no way either of them were walking away. Come hell or high water, they were having this baby—together.

Hopefully they would both be still standing by the birth.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: February 2016.

I'm a huge fan of T Gephart's work, her Power Station series got me hooked for more fun, sexy, romps through the lives of rock stars, there's something super exciting about living vicariously through a rocker's life, there's more to life than just guitars and girls, the stage and sexy times....okay there's that too, but behind the sexy scenes and the stage is witty banter, snappy one liners, characters who you wished were friends, even with the continuation of the Black Addiction series, there's a thread running through from the original Lexi series that has a sense of coming home, of revisiting old friends and meeting new ones.

Joey Shaw has long been the larrikin of the group, the man with the sticks who keeps the beat on stage and keeps beds warm off, very rarely serious, Joey is the man you contact when you want a fun night out, not who you contact when your would is tilted on it's axis. Joey might seem like a party guy, but the more you see of him, the more there is than meets the eye.

"Like if I was going to accidentally get someone pregnant, I'm glad it was you."

Kenzie Clark has led a pretty interesting life, as guitarist for her Beauty Queens from Mars she knows the in and outs of the struggling music scene, always one show away from hitting the big time, she's found what she loves in music, and has her sights set on following that dream until it becomes a reality, amassing a following and having steady gigs to bring in cash flow, things seem to be running smoothly. Until two little lines appear on a pregnancy test, that one night weeks ago with friend and fellow rocker Shaw has just come back to bite her in the arse, screaming fans are about to be swapped for a screaming baby.

"Well then, put your money where your mouth is. A little healthy competition should make it interesting."
There was so much that was fun here, Joey and Kenzie's connection was clear from the beginning, part friendship, part professional admiration, everything from their early interactions felt real, I understood implicitly how these two fell into bed, and how they could continue on with their lives afterwards, but what I truly loved was the commitment from them to stick whatever this was out for the long haul, their automatic and unwavering decision that raise their child together, so often we see denials or the blame game play out in unexpected pregnancies in books, but I adored Joey's automatic decision to step up to the plate, it was instantly endearing and hinted to there being so much more to Joey that I had previously expected.

I loved that Kenzie's pregnancy felt factual, that everything wasn't sunshine and rainbows, there was more to her character than the obligatory glowing mumma statements. I loved that the banter between these two never slowed, the chemistry always simmering below the surface, ready to ignite, I loved that I felt all of her indecision, all of her moments of confusion, all of her joy, Kenzie with her kicking arse and taking names attitude was tested by mood swings, hormones, a growing body and her growing attraction to the father of her child, I loved hearing her voice throughout as she figured out everything, sorted out her feelings about her baby, about Joey, about her work, her passion, her life, she had that fierceness that demanded your attention, that demanded you cheer for her.

"It's not the sex I wanted, it was you."

Sticks was a fun, light, sexy romp, filled with humour and heart, I couldn't put it down, while there's a level of make believe here dealing with famous rockers, nothing ever felt overdone or unrealistic, Gephart has me swooning at Joey's sweet words and gestures, the barter between he and Kenzie had me giggling and smiling like a goon, and the fast paced ride ensured I devoured very word, with enough drama and angst to keep me glued to the pages, Sticks was the perfect way to spend my night with old friends and new acquaintances, imagining the world Gephart created and wishing desperately to be part of it.

High Strung (Power Station #1) by T Gephart - Review

Blurb:

Ashlyn Murphy was not living the dream. Twenty-seven years old, college educated, up to her eyeballs in debt and yet she’d been relegated to pouring beers at a local bar. She desperately needed an out and was willing to do anything to get back into the corporate world. Well, almost anything. Dan Evans, Rock Star was NOT one of those things. In fact she despised him. Apparently he didn’t get the memo.

Dan Evans, bass player of international rock band Power Station had it all. He was rich, travelled the world, played to millions of adoring fans and had no shortage of beautiful women willing to share his bed. He didn’t need a moody redheaded knockout with a superiority complex complicating his life. Or did he?

When two people who couldn’t be more opposite cross paths, it’s bound to be explosive; sometimes all you can do is sit back and enjoy the show.

The right book coming along at the perfect time is heaven for reader like me, after picking up so many heavy books of late, I needed a change, something light and funny, with heart and High Strung was exactly that.

T. Gephart's latest work can be read as a stand alone or as a continuation of her popular Lexi series, featuring characters from the band Power Station, this book had me engrossed immediately. Ashlyn drew me in from the first page, with her quick wit and outward bravado she was sweet and sassy, she's the kind of girl you want to be friends with, and at the same time pray to god you never cross. Dan for all his crude dirty talk and sexual innuendo proved he had a heart hidden under a very well defined muscled chest.

What I adored so much about High Strung was the sense of greedy elation I felt reading it. These characters had me invested, I couldn't put it down, I found myself speeding towards the end with a desperate need to find out what would happen and simultaneously chastising myself for not taking my time to savor this world Gephart had created.

In my opinion, High Strung is T. Gephart's best work to date, she has shown a true flair for writing erotic romantic comedy, with the perfect blend of numerous laugh out loud moments coupled with enough heart to keep me invested in not only Ashlyn and Dan but with all the surrounding characters. Her ability to move seamlessly from scene to scene whilst evoking a range of emotions in the reader, has cemented her place as an author who is an automatic 1click for me.

Slide (Black Addiction #1) by T Gephart - ARC Review

 Released: 16th November 2015.
Blurb:

Touring with a huge rock band and landing a record contract means you’ve hit the big time, right? Sadly neither of those things gave Rusty Crawford, lead guitarist of the band Black Addiction, worldwide fame and fortune. Which was a shame because he had the lifestyle down to a fine art—without the clichΓ©d stint in rehab. Even being back in the Bronx, paying his dues didn’t rattle the charismatic axe man, ladies loved him and men wanted to be him. Fate would just have to catch up. Seemed like fate had more than just a platinum album planned for his future.

Alison Williams had the perfect life. Or at least she did until her world came crashing down around her, in the most epic way. With her future no longer a certainty she finds herself out of her comfort zone and into unchartered territory—a place where Rusty Crawford likes to spend most of his time.

Would the charming and ridiculously hot rock god help her find her feet, or send her further down the rabbit hole? One thing was for sure; both of them were in for the ride of their lives.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: November 2015.

Rusty Crawford seemed like he had the world at his feet, touring with world wide rock sensation Power Station and his band Black Addiction securing a record contract things were looking like it was going to be nothing but smooth sailing, but his stardom didn't seem to launch him quite like he expected it would, but in true Rusty fashion he took it in his stride, soon enough the fame game would catch up and he'd be riding the wave to world wide rock domination.

Alison Williams hasn't had the best life, her mother was never what you would call a good role model but Alison has set her sights on her dreams on becoming someone you could respect, she's got a good job, which will soon lead to a promising promotion, a great boyfriend that will lead to cohabitational bliss, and the world will finally lay at her feet.

Only it doesn't, her great boyfriend turns out to be a giant arse, and her dream job is left in ruins, she's about to be evicted from her apartment, suddenly everything Alison has planned on is left in the dust and the weight of her worries are crushing what's left of her spirit. On a whim she decides to be someone else for just one night and seeks out Rusty, the sexy as sin guy from her local bar to help her forget everything that's taken place.

Rusty has never had any reason to want to settle down before, he's lead a life dedicated to following his rock dreams, and with that comes adoration from fans, specifically of the female variety, but with Alison he sees something his never wanted before playing out in his mind, Alison has never been one to stand up for herself, that old adage of pay it no mind has never really fit her, but under Rusty's expert tutelage she's finally finding a way to block out the bad and embrace the good, together they make a formidable team, and like always with a Gephart novel I was captivated by both of them, Rusty was every bit the swoon worthy hero I wanted him to be, he was confident and assertive, funny and loving, and more than anything supportive and sensitive to what made Alison who she was, and is, never trying to change her, but giving her the tools to be confident and to demand more out of her life.

Slide is chockfull of sexiness, romance, laughs and just enough angst to keep you intrigued, everything about this book spelt out the perfect Sunday afternoon read for me, with only having limited contact with Black Addiction in the final book in the Power Station series before this, the characters still felt like welcoming back old friends, Gephart has a habit of instantly drawing me into the worlds she creates and always leaves me wanting more, and Slide was certainly no exception, with her writing continuing to go from strength to strength, I can say with all honesty Ms Gephart is an author I will continue to purchase without question.

Excerpt:

“Hello, ladies.” His voice purred, sending vibrations through my body.

It was him. My beautiful mystery man. The one who I’d seen plenty but never spoken to. He was standing in front of me, smiling.

In hindsight, I shouldn’t have been so surprised. There weren’t many bars in our little neighborhood where you didn’t need a Hep C shot before you entered. This particular establishment promised an impressive beer menu without the risk of a communicable disease, so it would stand to reason he would know about it too.

“Hi.” Was all I was able to manage, convinced he was probably talking to someone else. Perhaps he meant the Amazonian redhead who was sitting to my left, openly staring—that would make a hell of a lot of more sense. They could probably shoot joint commercials for teeth whitener and make adorable, if not freakishly tall, children together.

“I couldn’t help but notice your friend stole your drink. Ordinarily I’d overlook such thievery, but I’d hate for there to be a brawl in my favorite bar. So in the interest of keeping the peace, I’d like to replace it for you.” His voice smooth, as was his delivery. I had to remember to breathe.

“She wasn’t going to drink it, but you can totally buy her another drink,” Renee answered before I’d gotten the chance. Her smile widened as she turned to face me and mouthed the words “he’s hot.” She needn’t have bothered; his hotness was not something that needed to be confirmed.

“That’s okay, I’m good.” Thankfully words came out of my mouth even if they sounded in no way intelligent.

“Well, glad to hear you’re good. Nice to meet you, my name is Rusty.” He smiled as he moved in closer, his hand signaling the bartender. “What were you drinking?”

In what I can only explain as temporary insanity—probably from the shock of having the beautiful man talking to me—I blurted out, “I have a boyfriend.”

I officially wanted to die.

While I did have a boyfriend, and hopefully in a few hours I would be moving into his upscale apartment, there was no reason to announce it so dramatically. Almost as if to prove that I hadn’t secretly fantasized about him while in the shower every day this week—which I had. Sweat prickled at my brow.

“Is that some code for you’re not thirsty?” Rusty’s lips curved in amusement. While the words weren’t sexy, the humor in his voice was a definite turn on, a hot button straight to my libido as he stood there grinning at me.

“No, I-I just mean I can’t accept . . .” What was the word again? “A drink from you.” Yes, that’s what I wanted to say. “Or . . . or anyone else. N-not just you.” My mouth tried to regain some composure. It really wasn’t doing a great job.

“Well, would you look at the time? I have a thing, wouldn’t want to be late.” Renee tapped her naked wrist—her watch missing in action, as was her tact. “Call me, Ali.” She gave me a hug and whispered, “If you don’t screw this guy, you’re dead to me.” And just like that, she evaporated from the room.

Awesome.

“Your friend always bail on you like that, Ali?” Rusty’s voice curled seductively around my name as he smiled, moving to the barstool Renee had vacated.

“It’s Alison.” Ali was just too personal, like him kissing me on the mouth. I totally would not have been okay with that. Mostly.

Back Stage (Power Station #3) by T Gephart - ARC Review

Released: 8th June 2015.

Blurb:

Rock Star? Angie Morelli was not one. Growing up next to Power Station’s drummer didn’t guarantee a taste of the limelight, unless you count catcalls at low paying gigs in seedy bars and second-rate venues. She was okay with that; working her ass off at her dad’s mechanic shop during the day meant she could live her dream at night. She didn’t need Power Station waltzing back into her life, Jason Irwin had done enough damage the first time. Could she let go of her hurt for a chance of hitting the big time?

A one-night stand right before Jason Irwin left for his big break was no big deal. Except it wasn’t just any girl— it was Angie, Troy’s hot but young and inexperienced neighbor. It should never have happened, so best he pretend like it didn’t. Ten years later he remembered exactly why he went down that road. She was even hotter and she was also pissed as hell. Sounded like the perfect combination to invite on their world tour.

The road was not the place for history. It was bound to get ugly.

Book Three of the Power Station Series

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: May 2015.

With each title in the Power Station series I seem to fall more and more in love with these characters. This band of brothers has had me giggling, swooning and fanning myself more often than I can count. While Back Stage was still just as funny and steamy as the previous books in the series, I felt there was more depth, a little more darkness, I finally had the opportunity to crawl inside Jason's head and now I never want to let go.

Jason Irwin is one sexy dude, he's got the tall dark and brooding thing down pat, he gets his fair share of the ladies throwing themselves at him on tour, he definitely has no shortage of offers, but he flies under the radar, he is discreet in his extra curricular activities and as a result never seems to attract as much attention as Dan or Troy have in the past.

Years before Power Station hit it big and became the world wide rock stars they are today, Troy Harris lived next door to a much younger Angie Morelli, her world revolved around cars and music, a tomboy at heart, boys didn't even cross her mind until Jason came to stay with Troy. What followed was a summer of hanging out and an unforgettable night that changed everything for Angie, when morning came and Jason disappeared, Angie was left twisting between heartbreak and anger, years later with no closure, the scars of that night are still very much present.

Angie was feisty as hell, a heroine with a back bone, strong, independent, she's the kind of female lead I've come to expect from Gephart. Her heroines balancing the sometimes hard line of being independent and sassy, sexy and strong, confident and at times vulnerable, her female leads always have something that make them inherently relatable, easy to connect with and someone I am instantly invested in.

Jason was a dark horse, he was sexy as sin, but you always had a sense something was lurking beneath the surface, something that made him the way he was, simultaneously drawing you in and warning something big was coming. The camaraderie present between band members provided so much of the humour, to write a dual POV story is one thing, but to capture the kind of relationship these band mates have and to have it jump off the page kept me laughing from start to finish.

For me this was definitely a darker story than it's predecessors, while still having that balance of heart, heat and humour that I've come to expect from Gephart's work, my only criticism about Back Stage is that I'm sad to be coming to the end of the Power Station series, being able to revisit them regularly has been something I truly adored, and I'm not sure I'm ready to say good bye yet.

EXCERPT
“Hey what about Angie Morelli?” Troy rubbed his hand through his mohawk, the mess of crap he called hair.
Angie Morelli.
Yep, just saying her name was enough to send a chill up my spine. It had been ten years, and still not long enough. Her long, black hair and dark-brown eyes, something that had taken a while to wipe from my mind. That body. Yeah, I still remembered every curve. So freaking sweet, too. Unfortunately it wasn’t only her attributes that I remembered, one of my biggest asshole moments was also front and center getting the trip down memory lane. So you would have to understand why I didn’t immediately start doing backflips and welcoming her. The idea was to avoid the drama, not to give it top freaking billing.
“Dude, no. No fucking way,” Dan chimed in, his words echoing exactly what was rattling around in my head.
Thank you, douchebag. An Angie reunion was bad news. There had to be someone else. Hey, was Charlie Manson out of prison yet? I mean if we were thinking up bad ideas to take on tour, we might as well put them all on the table.
“She’s still playing?” James tipped his head toward Troy, taking way more interest in the topic than I would have liked. The itch to shut the conversation down danced with the need to keep my mouth shut. Delicate act. Wasn’t sure which one was going to win. Honestly, it was going to be trouble either way.
“Sure is. Lexi is trying to sign her band, Black Addiction; saw them last week at a club in Brooklyn. She said they packed the house.” Troy threw some more weight behind the cause. The conversation continued around me, even as the mother of all headaches took up residence in my frontal lobe.
“I saw her stuff on You Tube, they’re tight.” Alex nodded, the bastard not having any idea on what he was signing us up for, and I wasn’t going to be neon-signing it for him either.
“C’mon! Angie?” Dan rolled his eyes, throwing his hands up in disgust. “Troy, did you snort some of Wade’s nose candy before he left? She doesn’t have the chops for a stadium. Besides, she hates us.”
Had to admit, this was one time where I was happy for Dan to be running his mouth. Giving him a round of applause would have been too conspicuous, so I kept it on the down low, but I was a hundred percent behind his stance. The fact it wasn’t me who was leading the anti-Angie movement was a fucking bonus.
“No, she hates you.” Troy smirked. The Dan v Angie battles common knowledge.
“No, she fucking hates Jase, too.”
The motherfucker had to go there. He couldn’t have left it with his own reasons for not wanting her around. He had to go ahead and drag me into it.
“Hate is a pretty strong word, let’s go with a strong dislike.” I eased back into the chair knowing well enough that it wasn’t going to be the last on the topic I was going to have to volunteer. Fucking Dan.
“Dan I understand, but why you, Jase?” Troy’s raised eyebrow proving he had no idea what had happened between me and his sexy, barely legal neighbor before we’d hit the big time.
At least Dan had managed to keep a lid on it for longer than I’d ever imagined; I’d always had my suspicions that he’d spilled one time or another, but seems to be those concerns were unfounded. Who knew he had it in him. In the end, the violence was still happening. I’d just make sure I didn’t punch him above the neck, keep the SOB pretty for the fans.
“Long story.” Well at least it wasn’t a total lie. “Let’s just say I’m not her favorite person and move on, shall we.” The less I said about the subject the better. Besides, it was fucking years ago. Why the hell were we dredging it all up now?
“I heard she has a voodoo doll of you.” Dan stretched out his arms, anchoring them behind his head, his grin splitting off the side of his face. “Tell me, asswipe, do you feel any stabbing pain in your cock?”
