The Friend Zone (Game On #2) by Kristen Callihan - ARC Review

Blurb:

Gray doesn’t make friends with women. He has sex with them. Until Ivy.

The last thing star tight-end Gray Grayson wants to do is drive his agent’s daughter’s bubblegum pink car. But he needs the wheels and she’s studying abroad. Something he explains when she sends him an irate text to let him know exactly how much pain she’ll put him in if he crashes her beloved ride. Before he knows it, Ivy Mackenzie has become his best texting bud. But then Ivy comes home and everything goes haywire. Because the only thing Gray can think of is being with Ivy.

Ivy doesn’t have sex with friends. Especially not with a certain football player. No matter how hot he makes her…

Gray drives Ivy crazy. He’s irreverent, sex on a stick, and completely off limits. Because, Ivy has one golden rule: never get involved with one of her father’s clients. A rule that’s proving harder to keep now that Gray is doing his best to seduce her. Her best friend is fast becoming the most irresistible guy she’s ever met.

Which means Gray is going to have to use all his skills to get himself out of the friend zone and into Ivy’s heart. Game on.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: May 2015.

I threw out a book recommendation question to a book group I'm part of last year, and the book that kept popping up over and over again was The Hook Up but Kristen Callihan, like a true book junkie I already had it sitting on my kindle, so I dove in, I was enamoured, in love, in lust and laughing my arse off, the story of Drew and Anna instantly became a favourite, so you can imagine the kind of expectations I had for The Friend Zone, I was expecting laugh out loud funny, equal parts sexy and sweet, I wanted TFZ to catch me off guard the way THU did, I wanted to feel like I was slipping back into drinks with old friends, catching up on their lives, I wanted to be left feeling sated and overjoyed all at the same time.

Gray Grayson is one of the sporting elite, he's football royalty but when he lends his car to his best buddy Drew, Gray is left borrowing his agents daughter, Ivy's car while she is overseas, but this is no ordinary car, its a bubble-gum pink Fiat 500...not the greatest choice for a big tall muscled tight end. One snarky text from Ivy to warn Gray of his impending demise should anything happen to her car sparks a snarky friendship over texts. Slowly but surely the friendship that develops between the two is based solely on their phone interactions, quickly coming to mean something to both of them, they've never met, they haven't shared photo's, this relationship might just be the purest, most honest either has ever experienced.

The bond between Ivy and Gray was evident from the beginning, snarky comments, the constant banter, these two quickly forged a connection that was real, it jumps right off the page giving it a life of its own. Instantly I was hooked, I was invested, I wanted to know more, see more, read more, I wanted throw myself into Gray and Ivy's world and never come out, with flashes of other team mates, the return of one of my favourite couples of all time, Drew and Anna and Fi, Ivy's sister I wanted to drown in this world Callihan had created.

Callihan writes characters that jump right off the page, they are strong, they are brave, they call to you on different levels demanding your attention, Gray is the kind of man you watch, he's confident, sexy and charismatic, he's a mans man, loyal to a fault, he won't back down from a fight. He's smart and athletically gifted, but he works for every inch of the success that comes his way, where sporting stars in romance books often fall into the stereotype of spoilt, entitled alpha holes, but Callihan's characters are broad, defined, they are fully developed, multi faceted so that we get a greater insight into their world. Ivy is strong, sure, she's not the kind of female to fade into the background, she doesn't rely on her looks to get her through life or who her father is, she's the kind of girl who could easily be one of the guys or could hang out with the girls over a bottle of wine. It wasn't just the story that drew me in, had me intrigued and ultimately so invested that I couldn't put it down, it was the characters, the entire ensemble of team mates and friends that had me desperate for me more.

When the passion, chemistry, and connection is this palpable, this real I want to simultaneously speed up and slow down to savour every word, every nuance, every smile, every second of witty banter, every shared look, secret smile, brush of a finger across an arm, I wanted it to sink through the pages and into my skin, branding my heart like a tattoo, some stories you read, some you experience, some have messages that stay with you long after you turn the last page, and sometimes when everything falls into the right place, when you open the right book at the right time magic happens, it reminds you exactly why you read, leaving you feeling sated, and invigorated all at the same time.

Excerpt:

The backs of his fingers skim up my arm, raising goose bumps on my skin. “Nice top.”
Even though it’s thirty degrees out, I chose a black silk tank that hugs my waist but gathers loosely over my breasts. A tie around my neck holds the top secure. That I am braless is not lost on him. He stares at my stiff nipples as his fingers drift to the bow at the back of my neck and give it a little flick. “Take it off.”

“W-what?”

“Let me see those sweet tits you’ve been teasing me with since you walked in the bar.”

“I—” My breath catches. “No. I’m not taking my clothes off for a stranger.”

He doesn’t look away. “But you want to, don’t you? You want me to look at you.” He bends his head until his lips are at my ear. “You’re dying to expose yourself, to let me see those pretty pink nipples.”

My skin draws tight. I struggle not to sway into him.

He leans back, his attention on my top again. “Untie the bow.”

“Someone might come in.” Despite our play, my fear of getting caught is real, though not completely unwelcome.

“They won’t. I took care of it.”

I believe that. Gray would cover all the bases. In his own way, he’s as much of a planner as I am. But I can’t think of him as Gray now, not when he’s doing this for me.

His fingers are back, skimming over my inner arm, teasing the edges of my top. “Just a little peek.”

My breasts ache so badly, they’re hot, heavy, the silk covering them an irritant. With shaking hands, I reach up. The fabric tugs against my neck then comes free. It slithers over my skin like a caress.

He sucks in an audible breath as my breasts are exposed. I see myself through his eyes, sitting half-naked in this dim back room, my nipples puckered, my breasts quivering with each shallow breath I take. The vulnerability of it feels naughty, forbidden, and I nearly whimper.

A noise of pure satisfaction leaves him. Not bothering to lift his gaze from my breasts, he reaches out, runs the tips of his fingers over my nipple. I’m so sensitized now the touch sends a bolt of pure, searing lust straight through me. I flinch, clench my teeth to keep still.

He hums, strokes me back and forth as if he owns me. “So pretty.” He grazes me again.

“You like that, sweetheart?”

Eyes closed, I bite my lower lip and nod.

I feel him move. The wet flat of his tongue drags over my nipple. My eyes fly open on a strangled cry. He grins up at me, his mouth hovering at my breast. It isn’t his usual cheeky grin but something more wicked. “Mmm. Delicious.”

He takes a step closer, and I swallow convulsively. Gray’s voice lowers. “I wonder where else you taste good. You want to show me, sweets?”

I’m practically panting now. My hair swings as I give my head a hard shake. He leans in, trailing the blunt tip of his finger up the curve of my breast. I nearly yelp when he gives the stiff peak a quick, crude pinch.

His smile is pure male smugness. “Lift up your skirt and show me where you’re wet.”

A Beautiful Taste (Beautiful Series #6) by Lilliana Anderson - Review

Blurb:

It's never easy to go back. That's something chef, Bradley Rae is sweating bullets about as the date of his school's kayaking team reunion draws near. When his friend and teammate, Elliot Roberts, convinces him to go, he thinks he'll be fine going back there. After all, chances are, she won't be there at all. It’s been almost ten years. Maybe she she’s moved away. Maybe he won’t see her at all...

Dakota Morgan is a girl with many regrets, and Bradley Rae is on top of that list. You see, she did something - she didn't wait five minutes, and that tiny amount of impatience changed the course of her life forever.

When her father sets up a fundraising reunion for their family owned kayaking club, her heart beats out of control when she sees Brad's name on that list. Part of her wants to refuse to go so she doesn't have to face him. But a larger part of her needs to see him, even if it's just a window into what might have been...

When Brad and Dakota meet again, will sparks fly, or will the past remain firmly in the past? And what about secrets? Can they survive the reality of what that one split decision, made all those years ago, has done? Or will they let it all go again?

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: May 2015.

I didn't think I could ever truly love another one of Lilliana's hero's the same way I loved Elliot, because he and Paige stole my heart right from the start, I hadn't wanted to fall for Elliot but my resistance was futile, I was instantly attracted to him, what this has to do with A Beautiful Taste and Brad and Cody you ask? It's that there's a new leading man in my life, he's smart and sexy, and he's a chef and he owns me, his name is Bradley Rae, and you're in luck because A Beautiful Taste is his story.

Brad and Cody never quite found the right time for their burgeoning relationship as teens, things always got in their way, whether it was Brad doing what he thought was the right thing, or their age keeping them apart, but seven years have passed since Cody walked out his door and now that a reunion has thrown them back together these two might finally get a chance to talk about what they might of had and what a future for them could mean.

There's a delicious slow burn to this book, Cody like my other favourite heroine in the Beautiful Taste series Paige, has lived a life that was picture perfect, until it wasn't, what should of been one of the greatest moments of her life, turned into a nightmare of epic proportions. Her journey back to the land of the living has been years in the making, but she never forgot Brad, and he certainly never forgot her.

There is a simple elegance in Anderson's words, where this story has inherent sexiness, there's also a great deal of heart and hope in this story of second chances and finding your way back to what you thought was lost. For lovers of this series Brad and Cody will be sure to steal your heart the way they did mine, but for those new to the series, each book is written as a stand alone with recurring characters that allows you to dive right in. Like every new instalment in this series, I was swept away and lost in the world Lilliana creates, she once again left me swooning, and falling over myself in love with this sexy chef, with a heart of gold, and the good intentions of a saint, and admiring and loving a woman who's been to hell and back and is strong enough to try again and find the happiness she always sought.

Vintage (vol 1) by Lisa Suzanne - Release Day Blitz & Review

Title: Vintage: Volume One
Series: Vintage #1
Author: Lisa Suzanne
Release Date: May 1, 2015

SYNOPSIS

Born the daughter of a rock star and his groupie, my life should have been full of glitz and glamour. But the excess and embarrassment of that life didn’t interest me. Instead, I killed time at Vintage, a record store where I stocked shelves and lacked ambition.
Everything changed the moment I pressed play. One simple lyric awakened me.
When I stopped denying my attraction to the man behind the music, I started questioning his intentions. We were meant to cross paths, but it wasn’t because of fate.
Someone was playing with our lives.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: May 2015.

From the striking cover from Vintage I was expecting a rollicking romp through the world of Rock n Roll, a fast partying lifestyle filled with excess but Vintage is so much more than that, the newest book by Lisa Suzanne follows Roxanna Cecilia Price, daughter of rock God Gideon Price, she grown up in a world of financial excess but she's always been guarded, she lost her best friend to brutal murder years before and then the one shining light in what had become her dark world, her boyfriend up and left in the middle of the night over a year ago, no reason, no explanation, he just disappeared. Roxy was left questioning herself all over again. Would everyone she got close to leave her? Would people only insinuate themselves in her life to get close to her father?

Roxy is living a life of monotony, working Vintage record store, home, sleep, wash, rinse, repeat, her world is shades of grey after Damien disappeared in the middle of night, until rock band Flashing Light lyrics sweep into her mind, and Parker James chases away the numbness and turns her world every colour on the spectrum. For the first time Roxy is experiencing a connection so intense, so visceral, that she simultaneously is overjoyed to be finally standing in the light but nervous to be so enamoured by someone she just met.

There's so much going on in Vintage, in the first volume of Suzanne's new Rock Suspense series the more we find out about Roxy, about Parker, about Gideon and even Damien, the more we know something sinister is building behind the scenes, I love that sense of something always lurking in the background, that something is coming, the only thing I felt was missing from Vintage was Parker's POV, I would of enjoyed hearing his thoughts and knowing what was going on behind the scenes to give me a better over feel for this enigmatic character. There's a wonderful sense of knowing everything and yet not truly knowing anything, Roxy is inherently easy to like, she's been tested and hurt and she's still surviving, still willing to become invested in something new, and Parker with his cloak and danger hiding, he's as intriguing as he is sexy, and I'm looking forward to vol. 2 to find out what Gideon has been hiding, and what Roxy decided.

REMEMBER WHEN
Remember When Trilogy # 1

Years before Trip Wiley could be seen on movie screens all over the world, he could be seen sitting in the desk behind me in my high school English class.

This was back in 1990, and I cite the year only to avoid dumbfounding you when references to big hair or stretch pants are mentioned. Although, come to think of it, I am from New Jersey, which may serve as explanation enough. We were teenagers then, way back in a time before anyone could even dream he’d turn into the Hollywood commodity that he is today.

In case you live under a rock and don't know who Trip Wiley is, just know that these days, he’s the actor found at the top of every casting director’s wish list. He’s incredibly talented and insanely gorgeous, the combination of which has made him very rich, very famous and very desirable.

And not just to casting directors, either.

I can’t confirm any of the gossip from his early years out in Tinseltown, but based on what I knew of his life before he was famous, I can tell you that the idea of Girls-Throwing-Themselves-At-Trip is not a new concept.

I should know. I was one of them.

And my life hasn’t been the same since.

**Remember When is the first book in an NA romantic comedy trilogy, but there is NO CLIFFHANGER. It is intended for mature teen readers and immature adult ones due to some high school sex scenes, underage drinking, questionable language and 1980s flashbacks.**

REMEMBER WHEN TWO: THE SEQUEL
Remember When Trilogy # 2

You know how sometimes, your high school crush grows up to be an insanely famous movie star? Okay, probably not. But I do. ~Layla Warren

Back in high school, Trip Wiley’s fanbase only encompassed the denizens of the nothing little suburb of Norman, New Jersey.

Ten years later, all that is about to change.

In the summer of 2000, Layla Warren is enjoying her career as a journalist in New York City (well, sort of), while Trip spends most of his time grabbing Hollywood by the balls. In the days before what will turn out to be his skyrocketing fame, they’ll find themselves confronted with some life-altering choices.

Remember When 2 is the second story in an NA romance trilogy. It will bring you back to that exuberant and riotous time of life in your twenties when you struggled to figure out your place in the world and the person you were meant to be…

…and the person you were meant to be with.

**Intended for ages 18+ due to some questionable language and sex.**

REMEMBER WHEN THREE: THE FINALE
Remember When Trilogy # 3

"I’d spent too long in limbo.
It was time to put The California Plan back into effect."
~Layla Warren

I’ve been in love with Trip Wiley since I was sixteen years old.
Yep. That Trip Wiley.
Academy award-winning actor, known philanthropist, People’s Sexiest Man Alive two years running…
Yeah.
It’s not like I’m some delusional stalker-fan. It just so happens that he was my high school sweetheart back in 1991.
In the years since, he’s simply been The One That Got Away.
We just can’t seem to get on the same page at the same time.
Our timing may have sucked, but the feelings had already been confirmed. Years ago.
At least his were.
He doesn’t know that I had chosen to love him back.
I need to fix that.
And I need to do it now.

Remember When 3 is the third and final book in the Remember Trilogy.
It’s a story about taking chances and following your heart…
and knowing that sometimes, you just have to learn when to let go.

**Intended for ages 18+ due to some questionable language and graphic sex.**

DOWN THE SHORE

Blurb:

Livia Chadwick is a photographer by day and a self-proclaimed rock slut by night.

Her dating life is a lackluster parade of evasive jerks and her boss is an unrelenting nightmare of a human being. What else can a girl do but rent a beach house with her girlfriends and blow off a little steam every weekend? But hey, she’s from Jersey. Barhopping down the shore all season is sort of mandatory. All is going according to plan… until she meets Jack.

Jack Tanner is a contractor-turned-musician in a small-town cover band suddenly thrust into the limelight. He’s already had enough of the rock-and-roll lifestyle, and groupies have never been his thing. Then again… there’s a gorgeous brunette in the audience tonight, checking him out with the most incredible green eyes he’s ever seen.

She's looking for a fling.
He's looking for forever.

It’s gonna be one helluva summer.

Set in the summer of 1995, Down the Shore takes the reader on a tour through some of the Jersey shore’s hottest hot spots over one, sleepless, flannel-clad summer. It’s a look back to a time when the music was groundbreaking, the rock clubs were king, and bar bands ruled the world. Read when you're in the mood for: something light, funny, romantic, beachy, and nostalgic. For ages 18+.

***Not recommended for anyone under the age of 18, and/or any readers who are slut-shamers, guido sympathizers, beach haters or anti-music. Other people who should walk away from this book immediately: Readers who have sticks up their butts regarding offensive language, those who don't like detailed sex in their stories, idiots who think "Jersey Shore" has anything to do with actual New Jerseyans, and anyone who can't appreciate pop-culture from the mother-effing nineties.***
