This was my first book by Kim Karr in quite a while, knowing that Toxic was a standalone had me intrigued, the premise of Toxic was interesting, I adore second chance romances but this one seemed like it had a twist. While I was eager to start I'll be honest in saying the first 25% I was still undecided, I didn't particularly feel a deep connection to Phoebe St Claire, nor to Jeremy McQueen, I wanted to, almost desperately at time, but the story didn't grab me the way I had hoped, the memories of the "summer fling" between the boy from the wrong side of the tracks and the girl with the world at her feet has been done before for certain, but the more I read, the more it became clear that this wasn't your typical rich girl/poor guy scenario, so much more.

Years have passed and both Jeremy and Phoebe had reasons for running away, past hurts that left a lasting mark on their hearts, Phoebe moved on and in her darkness found someone who helped remind her of the light, and Jeremy turned his anger at the world into millions of dollars and a healthy port folio. While Phoebe may have moved in with her fiancé Dawson, her professional life was stagnant, with most of her adult life being spent trying to salvage her family's ailing business after her father's very public and scandalous demise.

I must say what initially caught my attention, was Phoebe's friends, a rag tag bunch of socialites and media darlings, growing up a member of this brat pack afforded them luxuries beyond most peoples wildest dreams, wealth, social standing, power, it's all they've ever known. But that's the thing about this lifestyle, no one seems quite as happy as what would be expected, they may be the have's in society and yet they seem to be struggling to find meaning and love the same as people across the socio economic spectrum.

There's an element of suspense in Toxic, Phoebe is most certainly racing against time in regards to her families ailing business, funds are strapped and financially what little they have doesn't seem to be adding up. When Jeremy and Phoebe finally do address the past, it seems like life is just waiting to throw up more road blocks.

What I initially felt was slow moving, gathered speed, without realising I was suddenly desperate to know more, I wanted them to confront the ghosts of their relationship past, address all the secrets and lies that had plagued them, I wanted here friends to find their peace in the world. If I sound like I'm being deliberately vague it's because I am, Toxic had a slow build for me, it's ability to draw me in was so subtle that I didn't even realise until I couldn't out it down, because I needed to know EVERYTHING! I'm excited to see if there's more for these characters, to see if secondary characters will get their story because I'm desperate to know what else is out there for them, Karr's writing intrigued me, and the world she created is definitely still fresh in my mind days after I turned the last page.

I live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I've always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. In the years since reading FSOG I've read a lot of BDSM themed books, one of the things I admired so much about Tara Sue Me's Submissive series was that it challenged the notion that people who live this lifestyle, that inhabit the BDSM world must be broken, must come from a troubled upbringing, that the only reason one can enjoy that world must be deviant in some way, I absolutely adored that in the earlier books in the series that Nathaniel addresses the misconception with Abbey, the perception that she shouldn't be excited or aroused by being dominated sexually, physically, that something is wrong with her that she has these needs she's never really been able to reconcile before, few other books in the genre have really touched on that for me, and as a result Tara Sue Me's work has always stood out.

Dena Jenkins is strong, smart and tough, as a practicing prosecutor she's spent her life on the side of the law, she's driven and focused, she also happens to be a sexual submissive, neither one of these things is the entirety of who she is, she had a D/s romantic relationship years ago with Jeff Parks, seasoned Dominant, he was her Master, best friend and lover but when things soured between them Dena was left feeling broken and alone. While they moved in the same circles it's clear neither of them ever truly dealt with their break up and grief of losing each other. When Dena's safety is in question Jeff is the one person she knows she should turn to, but with the ghosts of relationship past hanging over them, coupled with their still present explosive chemistry the question isn't whether Jeff can keep Dena safe, but whether opening up to one another could lead to a second chance or could it only lead to more heartache.

For a person who has no experience in the norms of the BDSM world, I always find Sue Me's writing not only captivating but informative, The Collar was no different, I was immediately engrossed, I fell asleep holding my kindle in my hand and when I woke I dove straight back into reading Jeff and Dena's story, having previously read The Submissive, The Dominant and The Training I was familiar with characters in this story, I had however not yet read The Chalet and The Enticement and it didn't hinder my enjoyment of this story at all. Dena has a fragile strength to her, you don't know exactly what transpired for her with her previous dominant before Jeff entered the picture all those years ago, while it has certainly shaped the woman she has become you get the sense that it is only one facet of her as a person, Jeff too seems to have a fairly luck lustre past, again it's only one part of who is as both a man, a lover and a dominant.

The building suspense of who is threatening Dena is definitely presence and while it does hold basis in this story, it proves to be a catalyst for allowing them to readdress their past hurts and heartbreaks, the true hero if this story if the relationship between Jeff and Dena. The unbreakable bond they still share, there's a beautiful fragility there, one that is strengthened by their ability to open up to one another once again, to build a better foundation than the time, one that challenges them to put the ghosts of the past to bed. The Collar is about so much more than just scenes, playrooms, BDSM, it's about trust, about forgiveness, about redemption and acceptance. It explores the dynamic between two strong willed people where in find more than just sexual gratification with the other, while there is sex, it never feels graphic, or as though it's been thrown in for shock value, it served to further propel this story that enchanted me so completely. I enjoyed every second of The Collar and can't wait to see what comes next by this talented author.

Chapter One

Present day

Jeff Parks knew it was taking all of Dena’s willpower not to look his way. And since he had once had that willpower bend to his command, he was well aware of the strength involved. On any other given night, he’d be using his own willpower not to stare, but in light of his recent decision—

“Have you been listening to anything I’ve said in the last five minutes?” his friend and fellow Dom, Daniel, asked.

Jeff looked back to the man standing at his side. It was late on a Thursday night and their local BDSM group meeting had just ended. No one was in a hurry to leave though. Everyone wanted to stay around and talk with Nathaniel and Abby. At the moment, Nathaniel stood beside Daniel, grinning. The guest Dominant had led a discussion about keeping D/s relationships from getting stale. Considering the two scenes Jeff had participated in a few months ago with the married couple, staleness wasn’t an issue between Nathaniel and Abby.

“Sorry. What?” Jeff asked Daniel.

Malcolm Saint, you sexy, domineering, alpha male you!! I wanted this book with a desperation so intense, so visceral that I was constantly refreshing my kindle waiting for it to drop, and boy did I dive in the second it did. I had some lofty expectations for Manwhore +1, I was expecting the same intense chemistry, passion and humour that I found in Manwhore, and while the intense connection Malcolm and Rachel share is definitely there, this book is a different story, it has so much depth, that I now realise we only scraped the surface with in Manwhore.

Malcolm has certainly known a lot of the benefits that come along with the affluent lifestyle he is accustomed to, women fall at his feet, men want to be him, he's both the quintessential playboy and street smart and savvy business man. Malcolm Saint is definitely not someone who should be underestimated in either his private or public life, the man who never saw himself settling down, or standing still suddenly has reason to, and the question is not whether he's capable of caring for someone in such a way that is all consuming, but whether he can move forward from the past and build a life with Rachel Livingston.

"You wanted your world to go still, stand still with me. I may be thirsty, ambitious; I'll charge out there, but this... what we have. Let's stand still here, you and me."

Rachel has lead a safe life, a safe existence, she's known both joy and sorrow, to the outside world her life is full of meaning and purpose, but in reality she's living her days subconsciously wrapping herself in cotton wool. Until Malcolm Saint that is, he was her greatest opportunity both professionally and personally. He would be the source of her greatest growth but fear has a way of blind sighting you, make you question what you thought you believed and what you hope is true, it makes you scared to take a chance.

"Don't you trust me? Take that leap Rachel.
I sound a little scared when I ask, "Are you going to catch me?"
It wouldn't be a leap if you knew that for sure, it'd be a step. In steps, you go by facts, you leap on faith."

There is so much beauty in this book, so much heart, all wrapped up in a sizzling sexy tale about a man equal parts saint and sinner, and a woman who's strength comes from her fragility and sense of wonder. Rachel isn't some naïve dimwit, she's smart, she's sassy, she's got a strength that's so ingrained in her being, but it's her sheer sense of wonderment at finding a soul binding connection with a millionaire mogul, and wanting to treasure it above all else, not because of what he could do for her professionally, but because she's known life before him and without him and she never wants to experience it again.

This book, Katy Evans words captivated me, there's a depth to Saint I didn't expect, he's every bit the cocky playboy, dominant and sure, but he's also got this softness, this protective side that we can see when Rachel is involved, when his friends are there, that gives you such a clear view of the kind of man he is, the many facets of his personality, the many layers that he's kept hidden for so long. The emotion is Manwhore +1 is raw, its' real, I felt every second of Rachel's desperation, of Saint working his way through his emotions to forgiveness, their sizzling physical attraction, but more that that I felt the soul deep chemistry these two share, like their hearts recognise something in each other.

"You once told me you wanted the world to stand still, you wanted a safe spot to stand still."

I loved every second of this book, I loved the steam and heat of their intimacy, I loved the battling of two strong and independent personalities finding a middle ground to meet, I loved watching these two grow both together and apart. Katy Evans grabbed me by the collar and refused to let go, captivating me from the first page til the last line, these characters have carved a place in my heart and I'm not ready to let them go.

There's a certain feeling I've come to expect will wash over me as I start in on a R.S. Grey book, it's a feeling of warmth and contentment, joy and frivolity, a little quirky, a little silly, a lot sexy and always fun, Grey has this ability to blend a rainbow of emotions into one tight, strong package, her characters are real, relatable, there's a sense that you could very easily slip in their world, and live the lives described.

Josephine Keller has always dreamed of greatness, of fashion houses, of product placement, of branding and blogging, of taking fashion trends to the masses, but first she has to get out of the middle of nowhere town in Texas she grew up in. Jo's big dreams for New York City life couldn't be further from reality though, what little money she had is fast running out and if she is ever going to bring her dream to fruition she's going to have to find a job and start developing connections within the industry and continue posting  on her blog What Jo Wore cementing her position as the future of social media fashion bloggers.

Julian LeFray has seen plenty of success in his young life, he's got wealth, looks and pedigree, when his sister Lorena takes some much needed time away from her fashion business Julian steps in and takes the reigns to ensure the business doesn't end up in the toilet, but while he may be business savvy his social media skills could definitely use some guidance, and Josephine Keller might just be the answer.

There's an inherent cuteness to R.S. Greys stories, her heroines are part quirky girl next door part sassy vixon, her hero's are alpha males without being arseholes, her books have spunk, and a boat load of character, the instant chemistry between Julian and Jo leapt off the page, it had a tangible quality, I could feel it in every conversation and meeting, every nuance, every sideways glance, every soft smile, every shared joke, every wink. What I loved the most about The Allure of Julian LeFray is that these characters aren't broken, they aren't nursing past's full of grief and despair, this is the kind of book I crave when I'm in a reading slump, when I'm down and out, or when I just want to escape for a few hours, Grey effortlessly draws me in EVERY SINGLE TIME, I never fail to feel connected, to feel invested, and LeFray was certainly no different, I didn't want it to end, the easy camaraderie between these two was both sweet and funny, and the chemistry smoking hot, Grey has easily cemented herself as a go to author for me.

Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.
