Shameless by Lex Martin - Review

Blurb:

Brady…
What the hell do I know about raising a baby? Nothing. Not a goddamn thing.

Yet here I am, the sole guardian of my niece. I’d be lost if it weren’t for Katherine, the beautiful girl who seems to have all the answers. Katherine, who’s slowly finding her way into my cynical heart.

I keep reminding myself that I can’t fall for someone when we don’t have a future. But telling myself this lie and believing it are two different things.

Katherine…

When Brady shows up on a Harley, looking like an avenging angel—six feet, three inches of chiseled muscle, eyes the color of wild sage, and sun-kissed skin emblazoned with tattoos—I’m not sure if I should fall at his feet or run like hell. Because if I tell him what happened the night his family died, he might hate me.

What I don’t count on are the nights we spend together trying to forget the heartache that brought us here. I promise him it won’t mean anything, that I won’t fall in love.

I shouldn’t make promises I can’t keep.

Shameless is an adult contemporary romance/spinoff featuring a character from The Dearest Series, but it can be read as a complete standalone.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: April 2016.

Brady isn't the kind of man who chases women, he's never really needed to, there was a time when he lusted after his close friend Dani, despite knowing she would never feel the same way, when she found happiness with someone that wasn't him, he nursed his bruised male pride and moved on, he had bigger things to worry about than women, like his dad's ailing health and crumbling family business, his brother had  left town to study in order to be an asset to their fathers business,  but instead had met a woman and eloped and was now a young father himself, with no intention of returning home Brady faced a future of sacrificing his passion in order to support his father and mother by taking over the family business. Brady is tired, he's worn out, he's frustrated and angry, once again he's stepping up to support everyone else's choices with little regard given to what he truly wants.

A phone call in the middle of the night changes everything for Brady, suddenly he's second guessing himself, he's rethinking every cross word, every heated thought, his baby brother Cal is gone and his last thoughts of him were filled with anger and frustration, there's a heady sense of loss, one the reader feels acutely. With the mounting pressure of a sick father, a family business haemorrhaging money, a dead brother and an estate to deal with Brady heads to Cal and Melissa's farm to try and say goodbye the only way he can.

"Death does that. Sticks everything under a magnifying glass and makes each scratch or cut feel like a gaping wound."

Brady isn't the only person who lost someone that dark night when Cal and Melissa died, Melissa was more than just Katherine's best friend, she was her confidante, her support system, Cal, Melissa and their daughter Isabella were her family, her sense of peace, her safe haven when her world was rocked once before. Katherine found a home with them, she loves Isabella like her own, standing in to care for her after her parents sudden death was never an issue, her bond with the little girl unquestionable, grieving for the loss they both feel so acutely, they are tethered to one another.

"Her chubby little cheek drops to my shoulder, and it's all I can do to keep from breaking down myself."

There's a familiarity between Kat and Brady, one borne out of experiencing the same grief, living through the same nightmare, wishing they would wake up and Cal and Melissa were still alive, that Brady was only visiting, that Isabella still had two parents. Grief and loss weigh heavily on both of them, struggling to keep the farm running, caring for a baby girl, processing and dealing with their own sense of grief, Brady and Kat circle each other, doing what's needs to get, focusing on just making it through, the connection between them growing deeper each day, their chemistry is undeniable, in another time and another place, they would be perfect for one another. Regrettably they are not the care free young adults they should be, Brady is facing the brunt of familial financial expectation, as well as guardianship of his baby niece Izzy,  and Kat has secrets that weight heavily on her mind. Finding solace and support in each other is inevitable, an intimate connection borne out of need that would end when Brady and Katherine returned to their own homes.

"Because in another lifetime, in a parallel world - one where he doesn't live on the other side of the country - I think he's the kind of man I could love."

From the title, I expected Shameless to be quick, sexy ride...boyyyy was I wrong, the author demonstrates her range here, making the reader every second of that bleak, shrouded sense of pain and loss, from the very first moments we feel something building, and when that phone rings, it's the feeling of dread, of anguish, of powerlessness, the loss so acute, the pain so real, that you can feel it wash over you, leaving you feel like you're treading water, just trying to stay afloat right along with Brady and Kat. Ms Martin weaves moments of hilarity through the tapestry she created, the connection they share going beyond purely physical attraction, it's a recognition of each other on a soul deep level, the ability to provide comfort and understanding to one another when they both feel so utterly alone. There's a rawness there that makes it impossible to look away, and utterly mesmerising to watch. Set against the backdrop of farm life, complete with animals to care for, Shameless tells the story of love and loss, of hope and most importantly reminds the reader that even after the darkest storms, there's a rainbow.

Monster Prick (Screwed 1.5) by Kendall Ryan - Review

Blurb:

Over my dead body.

That's what I told Gracie when she informed me of her plan to pick some random guy she met online to get rid of her pesky virginity.

If anyone is touching her, it's going to be me.

I shouldn't even be considering it, but I can't get it out of my head: her, under me, begging me.

***
Arrogant. Cocky. Prick.

Those are the words I’d use to describe my older brother’s dangerously handsome best friend.

When he learned of my plan to kick off my white cotton briefs, ditching my good girl persona once and for all by losing my virginity to the first eligible bachelor I could find, he flipped out. Said over his dead body.

He says if anyone’s going to do it, it’s going to be him.

I hate that I’m even considering his offer.

But I am … I sooo am.

Ever since he suggested it, all I can think about is his cocky smile on those full lips as he’s driving in to me.

But if we cross that line … will I ever be able to go back?

MONSTER PRICK is a spin off novella from SCREWED, but can be read as a standalone, as it features a new couple.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: November 2015.

I purchased both Screwed and Monster Prick at the same time, and read them back to back only taking a short break to write my Screwed review and make a coffee in between, after a bout of heavier books I was in the mood for something light and sexy, while I wasn't giggling to myself the way I did with Screwed, Monster Prick still definitely fit the bill.

In Screwed we meet Hudson, Hayden's best friend and business partner, and Gracie, Hayden younger sister. It's hinted that there's something there between the two in Screwed so I was eager to dive right in a find out what was going on there.

Gracie is twenty two, a newly graduated architect that has just landed her dream job, who has just moved out of her parents home on her own and is ready to try out this whole adult thing, she's finding her feet and is ready to spread her proverbial wings, now that the career and apartment is settled she's ready to tackle the relationship and dating thing. Her older sister is happily married with young children, her manwhore of a brother Hayden has settled down with a girlfriend of his own, she's ready for that herself, but before she dives headlong into a serious relationship, she has one thing left to do, just one pesky little thing...lose her virginity.

While out for celebratory drinks for her new job with her brother Hayden and his friend Hudson, she tells them of her plan to try internet dating, when the discussion becomes heated, she drops the bomb that she's sick of being a twenty two year old virgin and just wants to start living a little, when things don't end well, and Hudson ensures she gets home safe, he makes her an offer she never expected...he'll  be her first, he'll teach her about sex and after three "dates" if she's not happy she can give internet dating a try.

This is where the fun begins, Gracie has been harbouring a crush on her older brothers best friend for as long as she can remember, never in her wildest dreams did she ever expect to have a chance to know him on a more intimate level...what's a girl to do when presented with the opportunity to get something she's always craved but to say yes.

Monster Prick was a quick novella, it was light and sexy, I was expecting some big huge angsty twist like those that are so prevalent in forbidden/brothers best friend trope, instead I was pleasantly surprised that Ms Ryan didn't feel the need to go for shock value, were there moments that made me roll my eyes?  Yes there were. Did I at times think 'yeah sure that would happen?' again yes I did, but in saying that I could appreciated this short, sexy, light hearted romp for what it was, the perfect afternoon read, as was evidenced by reading both Screwed and Monster Prick in a couple of hours, still wide awake at 4.30am on a Sunday morning while I write this review. While I did read Screwed prior to Monster Prick, it is not necessary to, being that MP focuses on different characters to its predecessor.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: November 2015.

Kristy Bromberg has a knack for taking sensitive topics and writing in such a way that never feels intrusive, never feels like she's simply using a plotline for the sake of shock value. In Hard Beat we again meet Tanner Thomas, Riley's brother who we met briefly throughout the Driven series, as a foreign war correspondent Tanner has seen the atrocities of war first hand, he's lived death and destruction on a daily basis, he reports on the US effort to slow the juggernaut that is the oppression of the free world. But even the good guys often have darkness in their pasts, and Tanner is grieving a loss so great that it threatens to derail him completely. His only way of coping is to return to front line that decimated his life and left him reeling.

Beaux Croslyn is a fresh faced rookie set to join Tanner as his new photographer, from their very first meeting there's a spark between them that's undeniable, a chemistry that threatens to ruin everything that Tanner has worked so hard to create, a simple existence that allows him to carry on doing the job he was born to do. From furious fighting to an attraction that can't be contained Beaux and Tanner discover something neither of them ever expected to find, much less in the hell of a warzone. Their both hiding things from their past but together they seem to be forging a new future.

"You came back to me."
"I'll always come back to you."
Hard Beat has that sweeping sage feeling to it, their existence is lived in a hell so few of us truly understand, they live their lives in such a way that every feeling, every moment is expedited, a connection that could take months or even years to forge in the real world, can take only days or weeks, everything they feel is increased, everything amplified, and every second they spent together, even those they spent apart I felt, Bromberg's writing has the power to eviscerate me, strip me to the quick, and leaving me feeling splayed wide open, there's a beautiful dream like quality to her words, when she speaks of life and love, of pain and fear, of guilt and regret, I felt every second of Tanner and Beaux's journey, every second of their chemistry, every second of the soul deep pain they both felt, the more I read, the more craved them, and the more invested I became, Hard Beat is more than just romance, more than action and suspense, more than just two nomads coexisting in a complicated world, like always Bromberg begs you to leave your pre-existing notions of her characters at the door and to take an journey with her, her words, utterly captivating, her stories original and fresh, her ability to grab you by the collar and to demand your attention never fails to impress me, leaving me sated and yet desperate for more.

The Predicament (The Prosposition #4) by Katie Ashley

Blurb:

Unlike her best friend Emma Fitzgerald, Casey Rossi had never been overly maternal. She much preferred parties with Patron to Pampers and pacifiers. Most of all, she enjoyed a healthy sex life with her husband, Nate. But all that changed with the birth of their daughter. While motherhood is a thrilling, new adventure and her love for Nate grows even stronger seeing him be a wonderful father, Casey can’t ignore how stagnant things have become between her once steamy sheets. Between her exhaustion and Nate’s schedule at the hospital, there’s little time or energy for sex. She can deal with sporting spit-up stained clothes and a few sleepless nights, but she can’t abide losing the white-hot connection with her hubs.

No matter what it takes, Casey is determined to resuscitate her flat lining sex life. She starts out seeking the advice of her friends, Emma and Megan. But she’s desperate enough to try anything that she even solicits the advice of reformed manwhore, Aidan Fitzgerald, which turns into a fiasco of epic proportions.

Will any of Casey’s intentions be successful at reigniting her lost bedroom heat, or will they fail and cause matters to fizzle even worse? It’s one hell of a predicament.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: October 2015.

The Proposition series is one that I often come back to, there's an ease to Ashley's writing that makes it so easy to get lost in, and Casey has always been this snarky, loving, larger than life character that you couldn't help but love. Casey's sex drive is well known, she's definitely always been the more amorous one in her relationship with Nate, and she's never been shy saying what she wants. A lot of books end where The Predicament starts off, Casey and Nate have got their HEA, they're blissfully happy, married, with a gorgeous daughter they both dote on, everything couldn't be more perfect right?? It's not even that there's something wrong per say, but the deep intimate connection Casey always felt with Nate previously isn't the same anymore, sure they love each other, sure they're happy and have so much to be thankful for, but for someone who's sex life has always played such a big part of who she believes she is, Casey suddenly feels lost.

The Predicament is a short, sweet, funny novella that looks at married life and kids and everything that goes along with it, from hair brained schemes to rekindle the flame, to outright hilarity Ashley takes the reader on an adventure. The reality is, one that anyone in a long term relationship, anyone who's had children can attest to, is that over time things change, priorities shift, and what you originally had deepens into something else, that's not to say your sex life or intimacy goes down the toilet, but more that finding your groove again can shake even the strongest of couples, there's a sweet message here about love and life, about marriage and kids, about trust and communication, that I think we all tend to forget sometimes, it was one that had me remembering sometimes it's not about the destination, sometimes you just have to enjoy the journey.

Dark Wild Night (Wild Seasons #3) by Christina Lauren - Review

Blurb:

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
But what didn't happen in Vegas seems to follow them everywhere.

Lola and Oliver like to congratulate themselves on having the good sense to not consummate their drunken Las Vegas wedding. If they’d doubled-down on that mistake, their Just Friends situation might not be half as great as it is now.

... Or so goes the official line.

In reality, Lola’s wanted Oliver since day one—and over time has only fallen harder for his sexy Aussie accent and easygoing ability to take her as she comes. More at home in her studio than in baring herself to people, Lola’s instinctive comfort around Oliver nearly seems too good to be true. So why ruin a good thing?

Even as geek girls fawn over him, Oliver can’t get his mind off what he didn’t do with Lola when he had the chance. He knows what he wants with her now ... and it’s far outside the friend zone. When Lola’s graphic novel starts getting national acclaim—and is then fast-tracked for a major motion picture—Oliver steps up to be there for her whenever she needs him. After all, she’s not the kind of girl who likes all that attention, but maybe she’s the kind who’ll eventually like him.

Sometimes seeing what’s right in front of us takes a great leap of faith. And sometimes a dark wild night in Vegas isn’t just the end of a day, but the beginning of a bright new life...

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: September 2015.

I have a few authors I will drop anything for to pick up and read, and Christina Lauren are always right up there on that list, I was eagerly checking my kindle waiting for Dark Wild Night to drop, when it did, I dove in immediately. The dynamic between Lola and Oliver intrigued me in Sweet Filthy Boy, I was damn near obsessed by Dirty Rowdy Thing, by the time I swiped my finger to the first page I was fighting a smile so blinding I couldn't contain it, there's something innately sexy about physical attraction like that between Harlow and Finn, but the kind of connection that never fails to leave me breathless is friends to lovers, you see I'm happily married to a man who was once my friend, but more than that I'm happily married to a man that when we first met I would have told you was my polar opposite, I was certain he was definitely not my type, but that over time gave way to friendship, and oddly enough despite how much I didn't believe it to be true, attraction, and over time that grew to be exponentially more, so from the outset there was something special about Loliver's story that I connected with on a soul deep level.

For those who are not new to this series, we know that Ansel and Mia, and Harlow and Finn found their own version of happily ever after, after a drunk night in Vegas six people coupled off only to get married, while two marriage ended that night, one of which we revisited in Dirty Rowdy Thing, Lola and Oliver have been quietly congratulating themselves on doing the Vegas marriage the right way, with nothing but a hangover and a quicky annulment between them, out of the rubble of that night a friendship was born, one that even surprised themselves, Oliver and Lola have developed a short hand with each other, they've connected on a soul deep level, learning each other in a way so few ever do, they've catalogued looks and glances, smiles and expressions, but aside from this deep connection they've also been secretly pining away for the other. There in lines of the beauty of this dual POV story, as we delve deeper into Dark Wild Night we watch as Lola and Oliver's separate and combined stories weave this glorious tapestry. Separately these are two unbelievably talented and successful people, but together they are just two people who's worlds click when they're together.

Dark Wild Night in it's simplest form is a story about two people trying to navigate the pot holes that emerge when embarking on a new relationship, there's no crazy dramatic tear your hair out angst, no huge OMG I can't believe they wrote that moment, because the authors don't need it, Christina Lauren proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they don't need to rely on huge plot twists or shock value to sell their story, their writing, the characters they've created do it all on its own. I spent the two hours reading this book alternating between smiling like a goon and fanning my face, but beyond the sexiness and they witty banter, there's a beautiful message here about not fearing failure, about being willing to make mistakes in order to grow from then, there's a simplicity to one of the noblest of messages to not being afraid to make yourself vulnerable, to let people in, and most of that it's okay to get overwhelmed, it's okay to take a step back to calm your mind, even to freak out, it's just not okay to unpack and live there in that chaotic, mind numbing state.

Lola is every bit Queen of the geeks, she's an enigma, her quirks only serve to endear her more the reader, Oliver will his Aussie accent and laid back charm, mixed with his determined drive to succeed makes him a contradiction, there's something special about them individually but it's magnificent to watch when together, I adored every second of this book, every sexy growl, every smile, every wink, every caress and every sigh, I want to dive back in and read their story again and just get lost in the pages. Dark Wild Night is the kind of the book that makes me want to re read the entire series just so I can meet the characters all over again.
