Pucked Up by Helena Hunting - ARC Review

Released: 25th October 2015.

Blurb:

Miller “Buck” Butterson has been banging his way through life ever since a puck to the face fixed his messed up front teeth, and he was drafted into the NHL during his first year of college. After five years of deflecting goals on the ice and scoring them with puck bunnies across the Continental US and parts of Canada, Miller is ready for a girlfriend. A real girlfriend of the non-bunny variety. One he takes on dates and doesn’t jump into bed with after five seconds of conversation.

Miller thinks he’s found that woman in his teammate’s sister. Except, unlike Alex Waters, center, team captain and all round nice guy—who happens to be dating his step-sister—Miller’s manwhore reputation is well earned, and not blown out of proportion by the media. Beyond that minor detail, Miller doesn’t know the first thing about having a girlfriend. But he’s determined to make it happen.

What he doesn’t take into account is the amount of time and effort relationships require, or that constantly letting bunnies take selfies with him to post all over social media isn’t going to win him any points in the boyfriend department. Miller learns—not so quickly—that if he wants to make Sunshine “Sunny” Waters fall for him, he going to have to do a whole lot more than show her his stick skills in the bedroom.

Buck always kind of seemed like a dirty skeaze in Pucked, despite his manwhoring ways he had this soft side that shone through when it came to his step sister Violet, a fierce protectiveness when it came to those he cared about, but before he met Violet's boyfriend Alex's sister Sunshine, he never had a reason to feel protective over another girl. Sunshine, or Sunny as she prefers is different to every girl he's ever met, she's not the usual puck bunny he is used to, she's funny, smart, into yoga and clean eating, she's not about to drop to her knee's to please him and for the first time Miller has the opportunity to prove there's more to him than just the hard partying Manwhore of hockey.

Pucked Up has the oh my god I can't believe Hunting went there moments I was expecting, but there was also so much heart here, Miller exhibits stupidity at every turn when it comes to his own awareness of social media, but you can't help feeling sorry for him, he seems to meet bad luck at every turn, while it's hilarious for the reader, his life seems to be a series of one step forward and two steps back. Miller is an enigma of sorts, he's carefully created this image of himself, and for a long time the way he was viewed across social media didn't matter, because he didn't have anyone he desperately wanted to believe in him, Miller is all to aware of how the media skews the truth, and getting Sunny along with the rest of the female population see him in a new light might just be his biggest fight yet.

While Buck appears steadfast in his attraction, it's Sunny who needs to be sure of not only him, but of his intentions, to anyone who's met Buck, she appears to have reasons to be wary, and while the reader knows his thoughts and feelings as Pucked Up is in his POV, to the outside world it's almost inconceivable how wrong things go, it's comical to down right crazy how badly Buck misjudges situations which could ultimately lead to his downfall.

Where Sunny always had this innate sweetness to her, who I truly adored here was Buck, which is a strange turn of events for me, because I always tend to veer towards the heroine, everything about Buck was silly and irreverent, dirty and crass, sweet and almost romantic, he was the ultimate example of dichotomy in action, I wanted to him to be smarter, to look at his life from all angles, to think through the image he presented to the world, but I also wanted to accept him for his strengths and his weaknesses, and I wanted to shout from the rooftops how special he truly is, I wanted to be his greatest supporter to prove to all those who judged him that there was more there then just some rich kid who was living large both on and off the ice. The trademark wit and snark between Violet and Buck had me constantly giggling and the riotous adventure Hunting takes you on was a no holds barred journey that I wont soon forget.

The Art of Stealing Kisses (Love & Art #2) by Stella London

A priceless painting. A devastatingly handsome new boss.
A mystery I can’t resist.

Ever since billionaire art collector Charles St Clair crashed into my life, my whole world’s turned upside down. Now I’m trading my old waitress uniform for designer gowns, and bad blind dates for steamy hookups with the most eligible bachelor in town. But a string of daring art heists is turning heads - and all the clues point to St Clair.

Who is the man behind the myth? And what secrets is he hiding behind that million-dollar smile?
All I know is, I’m going to enjoy unwrapping the truth.

When The Art of Stealing Hearts leaves off Grace is left with her every dream in her grasp, a career she has longed for, a sexy man offering her the world, her life is set to change and it's almost impossible for her not to be swept up in the dream life that is becoming her reality, she may know Charles in the biblical sense but he's still very much an enigma, she knows so little about him, and as a result she's almost going into their new working relationship blind.

There's a sense of intrigue and suspense here, London traces the fine line through wistful new love and lust and suspense and action, Grace is swept up in the romance of everything surrounding her, new job, money in the bank, respect at work, and a man hell bent on showing her a kind of life she's only every dreamt of, but Charles might not be the man she thought he was, and she's wading through the waters trying to figure out if he's what Agent Lennox suggests or the man she's desperate to believe he is.

I enjoyed the second instalment in this series, and I'm eager to see where London takes me next, but I felt a sense of disconnect at times, the first 40% I struggled to truly connect the Grace the way I did in The Art of Stealing Hearts, once Lennon reappeared I felt that tension, that desperation to uncover the truth, to uncover the whole story, I'm hoping the third instalment will grab me from the very first page, and from where The Art of Stealing Kisses I'm assuming it will, this series is fun and sexy and has a youthful, almost wistful vibe at times, I'm excited to see where Charles and Grace go next.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Terri Anne Browning's The Rocker Series

Annabelle

I’ve always loved Zander Brockman in some shape or form. The boy who lived next door for the first seventeen years of my life has been my best friend, my confidant, my first crush, and my first love. I trusted him with my life and my heart. When he smiled at me I knew everything was going to be okay…

Until it wasn’t.

Zander

I haven’t seen that girl in seventeen years, and I’ve missed her every damn day. I knew I wasn’t good enough for her, so the night before I left with my bandbrothers for California, I stole a night with her. I lived off those memories. There hasn’t been a day that has gone by that I haven’t wanted to talk to her just one more time, but I knew she deserved a better man than me. Now, after seeing her again, I realize that I didn’t care if she should have a better man. My feelings were still as strong as they have ever been for her. I wanted to be with her…

But she hated the very sight of me.

Seventeen years ago Annabelle fell in love with her brothers friend, and neighbour Zander, for a small time, they loved each other fiercely, with enough passion to last a lifetime but when Zander was offered his dream and Annabelle moved towns, life got in the way. In the years that have passed Annabelle's life has changed dramatically, she's got a career she loves, a career she's incredibly talented at, working as a manager for stars he life is good, she still remembers every moment of her all too brief relationship with Zander but she's moved on, she's had to, Zander has led an incredibly successful life after leaving to chase his dreams, as a member of the hugely popular Other World, he's ridden the wave of rockstars and rockbands hitting the top of the charts and fading into obscurity, he's been lucky that despite the ups and downs life and stardom has thrown his way, his band is still standing strong, still playing sold out gigs, still touring and making music, his only regret was walking away from his love seventeen years ago.

When Annabelle and Zander come face to face after so many years apart after Gabriella was shot and fighting for her life in the hospital, both are left stunned, Zander might finally have the chance to speak to her after all these years, but Annabelle has moved on, for the first time in a long time Zander might actually have to truly work for something, fight for something bigger than just him and his music.

I really enjoyed this story, I've been a huge fan of Terri Anne Browning and her Rocker series, I was invested from the first time I met Emi and Nick and through every story I've been devouring her words, while I did enjoy Zander and Annabelle's story, I struggled to find that same connection I usually feel, I never really understood why he left her in the first place, his reasons never really making sense for me, I understood Annabelle's pain and anger, I got her hurt and sense of betrayal, that I felt but I never truly understood or felt it from Zander, and as a result it left me feeling disconnected at times. I wanted Annabelle to be...I don't know...angrier, madder, sadder...I wanted Zander to work harder to beg for her forgiveness, I guess at the end of it all, I just wanted more in the middle to explain why things happened the way they did.

After eleven books in this series I excited to see what's next for these rockers, I sense their stories aren't over yet, and I don't think Browning is saying good bye to them just yet.

Excerpt

As I listened, I couldn’t fight back the tears that suddenly threatened to choke me. From the first note that left Axton Cage’s mouth, I knew that there was no way OtherWorld wouldn’t go far with this guy front and center for them. He wasn’t just good; the man had a fucking gift. And it broke my heart into a million pieces. One look at OtherWorld performing with Axton singing their songs and any manager with a working brain would sign them on the spot.

Swallowing hard, I glanced at Noah. The look on his face was a mixture of amazement and gut-wrenching pain. He knew as well as I did—as well as everyone in the room—that not only was Axton going to fit with the band, but that this guy was better than even he had ever hoped to be. The pain in my heart at the knowledge that I was even closer to losing Zander than I had been just thirty minutes ago, doubled at the pain my beloved brother was going through right then.

The Aerosmith song faded easily into the Skynyrd song, “Free Bird,” and even though Axton’s vocal range changed, it only showed just how talented he really was. I lowered my gaze to the floor, hiding the tears that were so close to spilling over. I wanted so hard to hate Axton, wanted it with every fiber of my being, but I couldn’t. None of the pain I was feeling was his fault. He’d just shown up to a freaking audition, unknowingly ripping my heart from my chest with that amazing voice of his, and shattered it into a million little pieces.

I couldn’t hate him. Not when he was going to help the man I loved succeed in his goals.

Skynyrd drifted seamlessly into Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” with Wroth’s talented fingers. Glancing at Zander, watching him keep beat with the bass, seeing how much he loved being a part of this music world, I lost the battle. One tear escaped from my eyes and was quickly followed by a hundred more. I stood, keeping my face averted from everyone as I went into the bedroom and shut the door quietly behind me.

I quickly tore off my clothes as I entered the bathroom. Turning on the shower, I climbed in before the water even had time to warm. My knees gave out and I slid down in the corner of the tub, letting the cold water beat down on me as the first sob tore my heart loose from my chest. Pulling my knees up to my chest, I hid my face in my raised thighs and cried for the loss of the man who wasn’t even gone yet.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: October 2015.

Naughty King was a rollicking sexy adventure into the world of the Manhattan elite, from the outward glance Alexander King has it all, and to an extent he does, money for days, women throwing themselves at his feet, and Margo Buchanan once lived a life of wealth and luxury until her father took a tumble from the heights of excess they were accustomed.

When were leave off from Naughty King Margo and King wake up not so happily married, after a bender of a night out, the ever faithful Yamada ready to congratulate them on their nuptials. Margo and King may have animal magnetism, an intense chemistry that neither can fight, but outside of the bedroom they can't seem to get along, Margo needs Alexander's help to end their financial ruin, and Alexander needs to keep Margo contained so he can take over what's left of her father's crumbling empire.

Settle in for laughs as Valentine takes you back into the world of King and Margo, their chemistry seeping through the pages, awaking even the most discerning of reader's senses, there's a tangible quality to their unquenchable physical need for one another, but what truly left its mark on me was watching these two incredibly strong alpha's slowly bend to let the other in, both still fiercely guarding their heart, and protecting themselves from the scrutiny of others, but while Yamada is firmly in King's camp, even he can see the attraction between Margo and King, and is no doubt doing what he can to push them together.

Feisty Princess is every bit as sexy and funny as Naughty King, I was desperate for more, and while Valentine quenched thirst, as soon as I finished I was ready for more, the author left me eagerly awaiting more from this brash, titillating Manhattan fairy tale.
