Licked (L.A. Liaisons #1) Brooke Blaine - Review

Blurb:

As the owner of Licked, an eclectic ice creamery and bar, Ryleigh Phillips doesn't have time for that love stuff. Serving up Nibble My Nuts sundaes and Drunken Sailor boozy shakes are as close to an orgasmic affair as she's had in months thanks to her expanding empire—until the night of her ten-year high school reunion.

When Ryleigh's crush, gorgeous ex-football god Cameron Mathis, comes streaking into her life (literally—streaking), she begins to wonder if she really can have it all.

Wouldn't it just figure that the moment you think life is perfect is when it falls spectacularly apart?

Enter Hunter Morgan, the contractor in charge of Licked's renovations. Devastatingly handsome, and a smartass to boot, he's got his eyes on Ryleigh from the moment he finds her passed out on his couch (yeah, that's a long story). There's just one tiny complication—he happens to be Cameron's best friend.

When the lines between relationships and friendships blur, and it's impossible to choose between two delicious flavors, what's a girl to do? Taste a sample of each? Or go out and get LICKED?

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: January 2016.

Have you ever just been idly browsing your Facebook feed when you stumble across a cover that intrigues you, you start to read the blurb and #1click it before you even reach the end??? Well that was me last night... I saw one of my friends post about Licked and by the second line of the blurb I was sold, I shared that badboy on the blog and in my group, immediately I had readers declaring their love of this book, and I wondered how I'd missed it, this afternoon I dove in, and the rest as they say is history.

Ryleigh Phillips seems to have it all together, great friends, successful business an adult themed Ice creamery on the cusp of expanding and not to mention a rocking heel collection, but things for Ryleigh weren't always so peachy, as a lover of all things rockabilly and 1950s and 1960s she's always been a bit quirky, a high school can be absolute torture for anyone who deviates from the norm, Ryleigh never felt like she fit, she always felt like she was on the outside looking in, if kids are cruel then teenage girls are absolute bitches. Her one good memory of high school was Cameron Mathis, star of the football team, he was a dreamboat, and she lusted after him from afar. When she begrudgingly attends her high school reunion she has only one agenda, to find Cameron and make a move. When she runs into him in the most unorthodox if ways it looks like she's not the only one who has fond memories, her high school crush might just be set to become her real life adult boyfriend, all of her adolescent dreams could be about to come true, but there's only one small problem, Cameron's roommate and best friend Hunter Morgan makes her stomach flip flop, he's infuriating and cocky and creative and talented, but he's not Cameron, so we is she feeling so conflicted???

“If you can’t tell your friends to fuck off with a smile and know they aren’t going anywhere, then you don’t have real friends.”

Everything about Licked drew me in, from Ryleigh and her crazy loud group of friends - Paige, Quinn, Shayne and Zoe, to the charming and chivalrous Cameron, to the sexy and confident Hunter, Blaine's narrative is so natural, that I can hear Ryleigh's every though playing through my mind, she's quirky, and fun, and full of life, she's got a self deprecating sense of humour and she's got this easiness about her that effortlessly draws people to her, from her witty one liners, to her internal thoughts I was giggling from beginning to end, but the beauty of Licked wasn't just the sexually charged chemistry between Hunter and Ryleigh, or the witty zingers that flew between Ry and her girls, but Blaine's ability to seamlessly take the reader from laughing to swooning to heartbreaking anguish.

"It scares me to want you as much as I do, because you could hurt me. Break me. And I've been broken before."

I loved every damn second of this story, I adored watching these characters come to life, simply put I was invested from the first page, I wanted to slink into the world Blaine created, I wanted to hang out in Licked and After Dark and consume delicious desserts and craftily named cocktails, I wanted to swoon over Hunter while he worked, I wanted to be there for girls night.

"And all those things I don't know about you yet - I love those too."
The second I turned the last page I jumped on Goodreads to find out anything I could about Hooker, the next book in the L.A. Liaisons series, I stalked Brooke Blaine's Facebook page to find a blurb or a teaser or anything just to satiate my thirst for more of these characters, which should tell you how deeply I fell in love with this book. Do yourself a favour and #1click this beauty, sit back and enjoy the ride.

About Brooke Blaine:

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

She is the author of Flash Point, a romantic suspense standalone, as well as the co-author of the erotic series, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released November 11th, 2015 and is the first in the L.A. Liaisons series.

If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find - just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for ten years.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: November 2015.

Kristy Bromberg has a knack for taking sensitive topics and writing in such a way that never feels intrusive, never feels like she's simply using a plotline for the sake of shock value. In Hard Beat we again meet Tanner Thomas, Riley's brother who we met briefly throughout the Driven series, as a foreign war correspondent Tanner has seen the atrocities of war first hand, he's lived death and destruction on a daily basis, he reports on the US effort to slow the juggernaut that is the oppression of the free world. But even the good guys often have darkness in their pasts, and Tanner is grieving a loss so great that it threatens to derail him completely. His only way of coping is to return to front line that decimated his life and left him reeling.

Beaux Croslyn is a fresh faced rookie set to join Tanner as his new photographer, from their very first meeting there's a spark between them that's undeniable, a chemistry that threatens to ruin everything that Tanner has worked so hard to create, a simple existence that allows him to carry on doing the job he was born to do. From furious fighting to an attraction that can't be contained Beaux and Tanner discover something neither of them ever expected to find, much less in the hell of a warzone. Their both hiding things from their past but together they seem to be forging a new future.

"You came back to me."
"I'll always come back to you."
Hard Beat has that sweeping sage feeling to it, their existence is lived in a hell so few of us truly understand, they live their lives in such a way that every feeling, every moment is expedited, a connection that could take months or even years to forge in the real world, can take only days or weeks, everything they feel is increased, everything amplified, and every second they spent together, even those they spent apart I felt, Bromberg's writing has the power to eviscerate me, strip me to the quick, and leaving me feeling splayed wide open, there's a beautiful dream like quality to her words, when she speaks of life and love, of pain and fear, of guilt and regret, I felt every second of Tanner and Beaux's journey, every second of their chemistry, every second of the soul deep pain they both felt, the more I read, the more craved them, and the more invested I became, Hard Beat is more than just romance, more than action and suspense, more than just two nomads coexisting in a complicated world, like always Bromberg begs you to leave your pre-existing notions of her characters at the door and to take an journey with her, her words, utterly captivating, her stories original and fresh, her ability to grab you by the collar and to demand your attention never fails to impress me, leaving me sated and yet desperate for more.

More Than Enough (More series #5) by Jay McLean - ARC Review

Blurb:

There’s no emotion greater than fear.
No ache greater than grief.
No sound greater than silence.
***
I’m grateful he showed up on my doorstep,
pissed off and angry at the world.
If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here.
And I don’t just mean here on this journey with him.
I mean here, in this world.
*
I wonder what events in all our lives—hers included—are The Turning Points? The points where we all determine that the fear of our pasts and the uncertainty of our futures are greater than our need for happiness.
Here.
Now.
While time and everything around us stands unmoving… who’s to say we can’t have it all?
***
We wanted it all.
We wanted it with each other.
We thrived on the chaos we created.
And ignored the Mayhem that ensued.
Because falling in love was easy.
But sometimes, love isn’t enough.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: November 2015.

Sometimes a book comes along at exactly at the right time, it unapologetically knocks you on your arse, it takes you on a journey that at times leaves you gasping for breath, your heart strumming through your chest, it makes you question everything you thought you knew and leaves you perfectly sated and yet desperate for more. To say More Than Enough blew me away would be an understatement, this book unequivocally stripped me bare, it's message one of quiet simplicity, McLean asks the reader to check their preconceived notions at the door, instead begging them to join her characters for their journey, she tells the story that Dylan needed to tell, I was enraptured from the opening page, my mind captivated instantly.

Dylan has always been the ninja of the More crew, #TeamSilence a long running joke, the quiet man who has always stood back from the spotlight, the man who had no inclination to stand out, the man who was so adamant that he wanted his life to count for something that he enlisted to serve his country, picking up and leaving regardless of what he was leaving behind.

"But it is relevant. Because is and was is the difference between time standing still, and time moving forward"

There is a heroism to Dylan, his need to serve and protect, to provide shelter to those in the eye of their own storm, where Dylan was always comfortable to be a player in a larger ensemble More Than Enough is his chance to not only tell his story but to shine.

"There’s no emotion greater than fear. No ache greater than grief. No sound greater than silence."

There's a line in both the story and the blurb, about the sound of silence... and anyone who has ever battled depression, anxiety or PTSD will say with absolute certainty that there is no noise louder, no sound more haunting than silence, with its double entendre of quieting a raging mind, and yet allowing the voices in ones mind to run rampart. While More Than Enough touches on depression and it's far reaching effects, it's also a valiant story of survival, about love, and forgiveness. Depression affects over 20% of all people here in Australia, and as someone who is not ashamed to admit to suffering from it I've often struggled to describe what it feels like, but McLean writes so eloquently that she was able to put those feelings into words, when she writes

"The never-ending thoughts tormenting your mind, bringing you to your knees and kicking you while your down"
I felt every ounce of helplessness there, every bit of pain, of longing for the world to swallow them whole, these moments of heart breaking clarity, were juxtaposed with moments of swoon worthy romance, where the characters are just young and in love and trying to find a way to just be, when they aren't fighting their own battles to find themselves or their way to each other.

"Because....I plan on loving you like he did"

If it seems like I'm being deliberately evasive when it comes to the heroine in this story and focusing my review on Dylan I am. While the More gang features heavily here, More Than Enough is very much about Dylan's journey and his journey to becoming the man he always wanted to be. McLean never shies away from heart wrenching emotion, never approaches the story with kid gloves, and yet never exploits the characters pain for the sake of eliciting an emotional response from the reader. There's this beautiful message here that reminds the reader that emotions and feeling is okay, that admitting you need help doesn't make you weak. That sometimes you need to allow yourself to fall apart so you can rebuild yourself stronger and more aware. McLean writes strong heroines, hero's that aren't afraid to show emotion, she writes about friends who become family, and the craziest kind of mayhem that ensues when you open yourself up to chances and in turn life.

"All emotions are valid, Dylan. Regardless of whether you think it's right or wrong to feel them, they exist because they're real."

The beauty of story telling takes place when the author takes the reader on the journey that the character wants to go on, it's not always the journey the reader wants to take. More Than Enough is breathtaking for so many reasons, but most of all, it's sheer beauty, it's unrelenting power comes from the fact that this is the story Dylan needed to tell.

The Fall Up by Aly Martinez - Review

Blurb:

I wanted to jump.
He made me fall.

As a celebrity, I lived in the public eye, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost myself in the spotlight.

Until he found me.

Sam Rivers was a gorgeous, tattooed stranger who saved my life with nothing more than a simple conversation.

But we were both standing on that bridge for a reason the night we met. The secrets of our pasts brought us together—and then tore us apart.

Could we find a reason to hold on as life constantly pulled us down?

Or maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall in love at rock bottom—up.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: October 2015.

Where do I even start with The Fall Up...I'm at a loss for words right now to describe the emotional pull Martinez's words had over my heart...I'm ashamed to say this was my first book by the author, but after absolutely devouring this book, sneaking in every spare second to immerse myself in the world Martinez created it certainly won't be my last. I was captivated by the very first page, from the very first line, it was just that I was enraptured by the story telling, but that I was so instantly invested that I didn't want the book to end, to feel that way at 80 or 90% is a feat in itself, but to feel that way within the first few pages...well that is a testament to the author's talent.

Levee Williams is a pop princess, she's instantly recognisable wherever she goes, the darling of social media, she spends her days touring mercilessly, performing and in her spare seconds she visits children's hospitals to put a smile on the face of sick kids, but as with anything, when you spend so much time trying to be everything for everyone, eventually you lose track of who you are, the weight of the world and the pressure you place on yourself weighs you down, and you're left questioning who you are and how you ended up this way...

"Don't tell me you're fine. Don't tell me you have to go. Don't tell me that everything is okay. Just tell me the truth your eyes are so desperate for me to hear."

Sam Rivers by all accounts has a good life, he has a loving mother, a best friend Ryan Meeks, and the surrogate family he provides, his business is booming and on the outside his life pretty much rocks, but that's the thing about shiny façades, we portray to the world what we want them to see, and while Sam's life seems to be smooth sailing, there's a world of darkness that he hides inside.

"Levee, I'd like to struggle with you"

This book hit so incredibly close to home, there's still a huge social stigma that surrounds depression, and mental illness despite how many times we share posts on Facebook and social media to the contrary, suicide is something we push behind closed doors and like to pretend it doesn't exist, but the sad truth is that mental illness effects over 20% of all people in Australia, with over 2000 deaths every year attributed to suicide in this country, it's a universal fact that you will either suffer from depression or mental illness or know someone who does in your lifetime, and I commend Martinez for taking on such a heavy subject and handling it with sensitivity and heart.

"...you have no idea what you're getting into"
"No one ever does. It's the beauty of taking risks."

The Fall Up is about so much more than pop stars, or suicide or depression though, this story takes the reader on a journey where two people not only find their way to each other, but most importantly find themselves, the author tells the reader that it's okay to feel overwhelmed, it's okay to lose yourself, it's okay to feel shackled to the image you've portrayed to the world, and most of all it's okay to step back from trying to be everything to everyone, Martinez reminds the reader that they aren't Spiderman and that's okay. I felt unseasonably low when I picked up The Fall Up, I wanted something to carry me away and allow me to forget for just a little while, the author didn't just do that, the gift she gave me was infinitely better, she reminded me of my strength, she reminded me that feeling emotions does not equal weakness, she reminded me that life isn't about finding someone to weather the storms for you, but to stand by your side while you find even just a sliver of light in your darkest moments, and most of all, she reminded me that sometimes we have to allow ourselves to fall apart in order to fall back together.

Kick Push (The Road #2) by Jay McLean - ARC Review

Released: 4th August.

Blurb:

There’s a single defining moment within every skater.
It lasts only a second. Two if you're good.
Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.

The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the greatest feeling in the world.
Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment. Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.

Seventeen. Single. Dad.

That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.

You know what sucks about being in the air?
Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.
And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.
Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug...
And you become her poison.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: July 2015.

I'm sitting here trying to find words to do Kick Push justice, words that will convey the sheer agonising beauty of this book, words that will convey the depth of emotion I experienced reading this, but none come close, there aren't enough superlatives possible to describe what I feel right now, fear, pain, beauty, awe, joy, sorrow, excitement, LOVE ... none of them can truly capture the visceral response I'm living, because this book stole my heart within the first page, captured my soul in the first chapter, Kick Push was every thing I hoped for and so, so much more.

Josh Warden grabbed my attention in Where The Road Takes Me, he was strong, steadfast, fun and full of life and yet had this inherent sadness that always hovered somewhere just beyond reach, I knew with absolute certainty that he would the kind of character that would leave footprints on your heart, like Chloe he would change the way you look at the world, he would steal a piece of your heart and never give it back, and by God did he steal it, and the truth is I don't want it back, because getting it back means letting go, and I don't think I'll ever want to say good bye to this book, to these people, this family,

Becca Owens hides painful past behind her silent smile, her world has become a black void where she struggles to make it through each day, with no connection to anyone she's able to sink further into the darkness that surrounds her, until Josh and his son Tommy show her a reason to breath, a reason to smile, a way to coast.

There is a beautiful fragility to both Becca and Josh, one of them broken and the other bent, two people struggling at times just to breathe through the all consuming darkness, to put one foot in front of the other, to keep going day after day, they witness something in the other that makes the journey that little bit easier. McLean shows her growth here, roaming from laugh out loud funny to heart breaking, to joyous to the depths of despair, and you feel EVERY. SINGLE. moment of this breath taking story about two people and the family they create.

"You deserve for someone to look at you the way I have and love you the way I do. You deserve all of it."
And there's the sheer beauty of Kick Push, because don't we all deserve that, we deserve to love and be loved in return, we deserve to find someone we can just coast with, we are more than what we are told by those who want to hurt us and bring us down, we're more than what we allow ourselves to believe in the darkest moments, we aren't broken, sometimes we need a metaphorical band aid, and sometimes we need to be reminded we just need to kick, and then push.

Some books allow you to forget your troubles for a moment, some make you laugh, some tear your soul apart, some allow you to see the world around you differently, some make colours brighter, and moments stronger, some leave you reeling and some break your heart apart only to piece it back together, never quite the same as it was before. Kick Push did all of this and so much more, but more than any of this, Kick Push reminded me why I love to read, it challenged me, it forced me out of my comfort zone at times, it left me breathless and wanting, and for that I will always be grateful to the author. A good book will feel like time has no value, that hours slip away like minutes, but a great book will leave you feeling spent and sated, it will leave you feeling like you've experienced every moment, it will feel real, it will make you forget you were even reading in the first place.

Kick Push wasn't a book, it wasn't a story, it was real, and it was one of the most breath taking experiences of my life, and now as I sit here trying to formulate something to tell you how much this story meant to me, the best I can do is to tell you to BUY KICK PUSH, read it, experience it, let the words wash over you, let every nuance seep into your veins and breathe new life into your soul. For the fifth time since creating Glass Paper Ink I am awarding the PLATINUM LIPSTICK, I am awed by this story, by Josh and Becca, by Tommy, by Jay McLean's words.

Kristine's Review:

Reviewed: March 2015.

With some books the sense of anticipation is so keen, you're literally clawing at your skin waiting on it, since the second I finished Bad Romeo at 9.30am on New Years Day...yes I clearly remember the time as well...I've been desperate for Broken Juliet, desperate doesn't even come close to describing the level of crazy obsessed I was with getting my hands on this book. The absolute love I had for Bad Romeo was surreal, I tried and failed to cancel New Years Eve plans so that I could stay home and read, when I was dragged mentally kicking and screaming out that night I secretly snuck chapters in while everyone else was celebrating the end of 2014.

To say my expectations were high for Broken Juliet would be an understatement, this was one of my most anticipated reads of 2015. I hoped to be blown away, be lost in Leisa Rayven's words the same way I was with Bad Romeo, I wanted to feel the passion, the fire, the lust, the pain, the betrayal, the sense of worthlessness, of emptiness that Ethan and Cassie felt... you know that saying...be careful what you wish for?? I understand it now... because I felt it...EVERY SINGLE damn feeling, every possible emotional response I could possibly have to this book... I felt it...in spades.

Broken Juliet picks up right where Bad Romeo left off, with Cassie reading Ethan's email, his beautiful, heartfelt, apologetic email, the one where Cassie is finally hearing everything she wishes Ethan would of said years earlier. The passion, the chemistry that existed, that still exists between these two is palpable... it's tangible, as the reader I felt it seeping through the pages, into my skin, shocking me like a live wire, sparks coursing through my body, as Rayven's words awakened my heart and soul. Cassie can't deny the connection that still exists between her and Ethan but she isn't the same girl that was left crying in her college dorm room, she's grown up, she's changed, Ethan changed her, and after walking out and breaking her heart, crushing her soul twice, can Cassie seriously consider giving him a third and final chance? She's already been broken not once but twice, the idea of this failing again... can someone survive that...could she be put back together again if Ethan was to repeat his past?

Broken Juliet was a cathartic read for me, trading between the present and their college years, Rayven slowly peels back the layers, allowing you to relive their past, while they navigate whether they even have a future. I'm generally a reader who can feel any emotion whilst reading, and can then let it go once I've turned the last page, but this book doesn't want to let me go, when my mind wanders, images of Ethan and Cassie flit through my head, quotes that I adored feel as though they are imprinted on my brain...this book clawed it's way in, and has taken up residence in my heart and soul, and I doubt I'll ever truly let it go. If you take one thing from this review, it's to pick up this series, read it, breathe it, talk about it with friends, allow the emotions you feel to wash over you like I did, you won't be sorry.
