He Will Be My Ruin by KA Tucker - Review

Blurb:

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her romantic thriller debut with this heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

A woman who almost had it all...

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation...

Twenty-eight-year-old Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a bottle of Xanax and a handle of Maker’s Mark, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers secrets in the childhood lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man who Celine believed change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for answers that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Kristine's Review:
Reviewed: January 2016.

A little known fact about me is that before I became the romance loving reader that I am today, I once read true crime and psychological thrillers almost exclusively, I would pour through the pages of the dark and depraved and find myself enraptured by the authors words, getting lost in something that kept me on the edge of my seat, desperate to know that the hero or heroine would make it out of the tale alive. It's been a long time since I read books like that, but another little known fact was that the morning He Will Be My Ruin showed up on my doorstep, I tore open the package and turned the first page, what was supposed to be me going into work early ended up being a morning I was late to work. I couldn't put it down, Something about Celine's fateful end, and Maggie's search for the truth had me enraptured, I couldn't look away, I couldn't put it down, the more I read the more I NEEDED to know.

Celine seemed to have the perfect life, everything she had worked so hard for was finally within her reach, with her life cut tragically short by her own hand, Maggie was left wondering whether she truly has even known her, what secrets was she guarding, was secret life was she living, why couldn't she tell Maggie anything important about what was going on for her? The more Maggie begins to question everything, the more questions begin to arise and the more Maggie needs to scour through Celine's secrets and lies to uncover the truth. One photograph changes everything, it leads Maggie to believe there was so much more that Celine was hiding than just the man she had fallen for, a man Maggie didn't even know existed, but the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her game of cat and mouse becomes, unwittingly Maggie is caught in the cross hairs of a game the killer doesn't want her to win.

Utterly addictive, captivating from the first page to the last line, KA Tucker weaved a web of deceit and destruction that had already claimed one persons life, the sense of sorrow I felt at knowing that Celine's life had ended far too early, and sense of suspense I felt knowing it would be impossible to walk away. Tucker's words kept me on the edge of my seat, guarding my heart, knowing that every second that ticked by, the closer that Maggie could come to the same fate that her best friend met. He Will Be My Ruin was a thrill ride I didn't want to get off, whether you're a lover of romance or not, KA Tucker's newest release is a must read.
